Position Description
The Unit of Mathematics at Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi invites applications for a Full Professor of Mathematical Statistics, with a focus on applications to Machine Learning. The successful candidate will primarily teach in the Master’s program in Mathematics, which will open in September 2026. Courses will include fundamental theoretical lectures in Statistics, Probability and Functional Analysis, as well as advanced courses in Statistics oriented towards Machine Learning. Teaching responsibilities may also extend to undergraduate programs. The typical teaching load amounts to 192 hours per academic year, which corresponds to roughly 7 hours per week over 28 weeks. All programs are designed by Sorbonne Université – Faculty of Science in France, taught exclusively in English, follow the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), and degrees are awarded by Sorbonne Université Paris. The candidate must demonstrate an outstanding research record in Statistics and its applications, with publications in top-tier international peer-reviewed mathematics journals. Within the Mathematics Unit, the recruited faculty member will be expected to take a leading role in research, coordinate the Master’s program, and contribute actively to the supervision of students, including internships and Master’s theses. Close collaboration with the Sorbonne Center for Artificial Intelligence (SCAI), established in January 2020 on both the Paris and Abu Dhabi campuses, will be an essential component of this position. In addition, the recruited faculty member is expected to serve on University and Department committees, to engage actively in departmental activities, and to contribute to visibility and outreach efforts. This includes establishing and strengthening collaborations with local and international companies and institutions.
Role & Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will teach in the new Master’s program in Mathematics, concentration in Statistics, Learning, and Artificial Intelligence Algorithms (expected launch September 2026).
- Teaching: Courses will include fundamental theoretical lectures in Statistics, Probability, and Functional Analysis, as well as advanced courses in Statistics oriented towards Machine Learning. Responsibilities may extend to undergraduate programs.
- Research: The candidate must demonstrate an outstanding research record in Statistics and its applications, with publications in top-tier international peer-reviewed mathematics journals. A leading role in research coordination and student supervision (including Master’s theses) is expected.
- Collaboration: Close collaboration with the Sorbonne Center for Artificial Intelligence (SCAI) is an essential component of this position.
Working Conditions:
- Typical teaching load: 192 hours per academic year (approx. 7 hours per week).
- Degrees are awarded by Sorbonne Université - Paris.
- Programs follow the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).
Requirements:
- PhD is mandatory.
- Habilitation (HDR) or French Law Agrégation is required only where applicable (CNU approval is mandatory if the qualification was obtained in France).
- Candidates currently holding the rank of Associate Professor or Assistant Professor are preferred.
- 6 to 8 years of teaching and research experience in higher education (including PhD experience).
- Proven track record of exceptional achievements in international/interdisciplinary research and graduate supervision.
- Languages: English is mandatory. French and Arabic would be an added value.
