Position Description
Summer 2026 Stanford University Mathematics Camp Instructor Remote Work OpportunityPosition Overview
The Summer 2026 SUMaC Online Instructor will teach Program 1 in the Stanford University Mathematics Camp (SUMaC) Online program. SUMaC serves a select group of rising high school juniors and seniors who have an exceptional interest in mathematics and who are prepared for the study of abstract algebra and number theory. Courses meet live on Zoom for three hours each day from 5pm to 8pm (Monday through Friday). This is a fully remote position that can be completed from anywhere in the United States (U.S.). You will be required to provide your own equipment.
Position Responsibilities:
- Schedule and facilitate 3 hours of learning activities each weekday from 5-8 pm pacific time. These activities can be a combination of lecture, classroom discussion, and small group activities.
- Schedule and hold small group office hours to support students’ learning and progress.
- Communicate daily with instructional assistants to ensure effective support during problem set sessions and to monitor student progress.
- Complete a narrative evaluation for each participant due within two weeks after the last day of the program’s end.
- Actively participate in an Instructor planning meeting, participant orientation, and closing ceremony event.
Program I topics are introduced through motivating problems such as limitations of straight-edge and compass constructions, classification of patterns in two dimensions, error-correcting codes, cryptography, and the analysis of symmetry in structures.
The mathematics central to solving these problems comes from the areas of abstract algebra and number theory. Abstract algebra originated in the early part of the 19th century through the study of polynomial equations. This branch of mathematics lies at the core of many areas of modern mathematical research. Number theory concerns the properties of integers and has its origins in ancient mathematics. Number theory remains a very active field of study with interesting open problems and important applications in computer science.
