Position Description
1. About the Institute
The Jinan University – University of Birmingham Joint Institute (J-BJI) was jointly established by Jinan University and the University of Birmingham in 2016, and is approved by the Ministry of Education of China as a Sino-Foreign Cooperative Education Institute. The Joint Institute currently offers four undergraduate programmes in mathematics and statistics, with an enrolment of over 1,000 students. Three postgraduate programmes (Statistical Data Science, Bioinformatics, and Healthcare Data Science) will soon be launched jointly with the University of Birmingham.
The Institute places a strong emphasis on academic development and research excellence. It is committed to advancing disciplinary development in mathematics, statistics, and artificial intelligence; fostering interdisciplinary integration; and promoting emerging areas of research. Leveraging the collaborative platform between Jinan University and the University of Birmingham, the Institute maintains close partnerships with leading universities and research institutions worldwide, engaging actively in joint research, faculty exchange, and academic cooperation. J-BJI is dedicated to building an open and collaborative research environment and aims to become a high-impact academic and innovation hub with international visibility.

2. Positions and Areas of Specialization
J-BJI invites applications for tenure-track and tenured positions at the ranks of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Full Professor in the following areas:
n Fundamental Mathematics
n Computational Mathematics
n Applied Mathematics
n Probability and Mathematical Statistics
n Applied Statistics
n Operational Research and Cybernetics
n (Optional) Interdisciplinary areas in Mathematics and AI: Machine Learning, Statistical Learning, Optimization, Computational Modelling, etc.
Candidates with strong research potential or established academic records in these areas are encouraged to apply.
3. Responsibilities
Teaching: Deliver undergraduate and postgraduate courses in English using inclusive and innovative pedagogical approaches.
Research: Conduct high-quality research in mathematics, statistics, or related fields; publish in leading or authoritative academic journals; and actively pursue external research funding.
Student Supervision: Advise and mentor undergraduate and postgraduate students in academic and research development.
Service: Contribute to academic committees, curriculum development, and institute-level initiatives.
Equity and Inclusion: Promote inclusive and culturally responsive teaching and supervision practices.
4. Qualifications
Required Qualifications
n A PhD in Mathematics, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, or a related field at the time of appointment.
n Strong professional ethics and academic reputation.
n For Associate/Full Professor positions: experience at internationally recognized universities or research institutions and holding the corresponding academic rank.
n Evidence of effective teaching and mentorship.
Preferred Qualifications
n Experience teaching undergraduate or graduate courses.
n Demonstrated success in securing external research funding.
n Familiarity with active learning or culturally responsive teaching methods.
n A strong track record in interdisciplinary research in mathematics, statistics, AI, or related fields.
