Position Description

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Swarthmore College invites applications for a 3-year Visiting Assistant Professor position beginning Fall 2026. We seek candidates with a Ph.D. in mathematics or related discipline in hand by August 2026; an interest and demonstrated ability to teach at both the introductory and advanced undergraduate level, in a manner that speaks to and motivates undergraduates from diverse backgrounds; and the potential for innovative and impactful scholarship. 

Applications should include: 
  1. A cover letter that describes a) how you would thrive at an undergraduate-only institution and b) how this position will contribute to your professional trajectory, 
  2. A document that includes a) a list of the courses in the Swarthmore math/stat curriculum that you are particularly enthusiastic to teach and b) a list of the courses for which you have experience in teaching (specifying whether you served as a teaching assistant or as the instructor of record), 
  3. A curriculum vitae, 
  4. A teaching statement that specifies your philosophy, policies, and practices that support student success and encourage the inclusion of students from underrepresented groups in the field, 
  5. A research statement, 
  6. Three letters of recommendation, including at least one that addresses teaching beyond what may be found in student evaluations.
