Position Description

The School of Mathematics at the University of Minnesota is soliciting applications for an Interdisciplinary Postdoctoral position, which will begin in the Fall semester 2026 or Spring semester 2027. We seek candidates with demonstrated excellence in interdisciplinary research at the interface of mathematics and another field. Ideal candidates will have a strong mathematical background and be engaged in addressing important challenges in areas outside of mathematics through close collaboration with scientists and scholars in those areas. Successful candidates will demonstrate how their mathematical and computational work makes substantive contributions to advancing these fields. Applications are welcome from candidates applying mathematical research to a wide range of areas, including but not limited to physics, engineering, medicine, agriculture, and social sciences. The goal of this program is to strengthen connections between the mathematics department and other disciplines across science, engineering and the humanities, and to catalyze new collaborations and research directions within the department. Fellows will have the opportunity to be jointly mentored by a faculty member within the mathematics department as well as a faculty member in another department. We provide robust career development programs and mentoring opportunities, both at the department level and College of Science and Engineering level. The University of Minnesota placed sixth overall (and the top U.S. public university) in the 2025 Times Higher Education’s Interdisciplinary Science Rankings. The position has a teaching load of two one-semester courses per academic year, with the possibility of further reduction through contributions from faculty mentors. The department is committed to building a diverse, supportive, and inclusive community for all students and faculty, and is particularly interested in candidates who have a demonstrated interest in furthering these goals.

Applications and all supporting materials must be submitted electronically through MathJobs. Applicants must include the following:

  • cover letter,
  • curriculum vitae,
  • research statement - particularly addressing the interdisciplinary research focus,
  • teaching statement, and
  • four letters of recommendation, at least one of which addresses teaching ability.

Applicants may also provide an optional statement to describe their contributions in other aspects of their candidacy, such as service and outreach efforts. Reference letter writers should be asked to submit their letters online through mathjobs.org. Applications received by February 13, 2026 will receive full consideration, and we will continue reviewing applications for as long as positions are available. Note that H-1B sponsorship may be provided to those who currently hold a valid visa and are present in the United States.
