Position Description
The Bates College Mathematics Department invites applications for a one year visiting position at the rank of assistant professor, beginning July 1, 2026. Candidates should have a commitment to undergraduate education and should show promise of excellence and innovation in teaching. Teaching load is five courses per academic year, with courses taught in person, and includes courses from the introductory to the advanced level. The primary responsibility of the visiting professor is excellence in undergraduate teaching and student engagement. Responsibilities are limited in scope and focus on teaching and mentoring students during the term of the appointment. In some cases, visiting faculty at Bates advise senior theses or teach a capstone seminar. Visiting faculty do not participate in shared governance and are not assigned ongoing administrative or committee responsibilities. They are required to attend faculty meetings and encouraged to attend departmental meetings related to teaching and to engage collegially in the academic life of the department. An equitable, inclusive and diverse campus and curriculum are critical to our educational mission. Therefore the college and the Mathematics Department are committed to enhancing equity, inclusion and diversity, including our capacity for teaching students from all backgrounds. Candidates with demonstrated success in teaching marginalized, first generation and historically underrepresented students are especially encouraged to apply; the search committee expects candidates to identify their strengths and experiences in this area. Review of applications begins March 1, 2026 and will continue until the position is filled. Preference will be given to candidates who will have completed by July 1, 2026 the Ph.D. in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, or other appropriate field. Applicants should submit all requested materials electronically, in PDF format. Only the documents requested in this ad will be considered for review of applications. Applications should include the following: Cover letter; CV; Teaching statement that includes a description of how your teaching can contribute to a learning community that values equity and inclusion; The names and contact information of three references, at least one of whom can address your teaching experience or potential. Employment is contingent on successful completion of a background check and degree verification.
