Position Description

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Maine invites applications for an ongoing teaching position at the rank of Lecturer, with anticipated start date of July 15 or August 31, 2026. During the 9-month academic year, lecturers normally teach three classes per semester. This extended position also includes 1.5 months of summer mathematics instruction (July 15 – August 31) to incoming first-year engineering (and potentially other) majors, enabling more of them to start further ahead in the calculus sequence in the fall semester. This summer component of the position is in place for three years initially, after which it is contingent on success of the initiative and availability of funding.

At this time, the Department of Mathematics and Statistics is unable to consider applicants who require visa sponsorship support.

This position is ongoing as an academic-year position, contingent upon satisfactory performance. Lecturers at the University of Maine have a promotion track and "just cause" protection after 6 years of service. The successful candidate will have the option to join the faculty union, and will benefit from collective bargaining.

We welcome applications from candidates who can contribute to an inclusive student experience for a student body that reflects the university’s commitment to non-discrimination.

Demonstrated excellent college-level teaching and effective written and oral communication skills are required. A degree (bachelor’s level or graduate level) in mathematics, applied mathematics, or statistics is required by date of hire. A graduate degree (master’s level or higher) in one of these areas or in mathematics education is also required. Some preference may be given to candidates with other qualifications, professional experience, and/or scholarly activity relevant to the responsibilities of the position. Breadth of teaching experience will be given some preference, depending on the relevance of the classes taught to the needs of the department.

Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: undergraduate teaching in mathematics and/or statistics at the 100-level, course coordination, assessment, curriculum development, and/or other leadership activity related to instruction. Additional summer teaching opportunities may be available with additional compensation. Service to the department and university, participating collegially in the life of the department, and engaging in activities that enhance one’s professional development are also expected. This is an in-person, on-campus position.
