Position Description

The Berlin Mathematica Research Center MATH+ is hiring one new Junior Research Group Leader (JRGL) at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. The position is in Optimization: We are looking for a candidate to establish and lead a research group developing and analyzing novel approaches to optimization, their implementation, and their use in application-oriented tasks. The position offers a unique opportunity to pursue research on interdisciplinary scientific issues in the MATH+ context: application-oriented research that encompasses mathematics as well as disciplines such as materials science, chemistry or physics development.

As a JRGL, you will be responsible for designing the research program, planning and implementation of research projects within your research group as well as the supervision of project staff. We expect publication of research results in leading international and national journals, the presentation of the project at national and international conferences and workshops as well as in scientific publications, and the independent implementation of transfer activities. We strongly encourage the cooperation with the colleagues in mathematical optimization and applied mathematics at the institute, e.g., in joint project applications.

Your profile includes a completed doctorate in mathematics or a related field, in-depth knowledge of a subfield of optimization, such as optimization with PDEs, nonsmooth optimization, and/or discrete/continuous optimization. Experience with machine learning is desirable as are several years of independent research experience in the field of optimization, demonstrated by relevant publications in internationally peer-reviewed journals. Experience in supervising and mentoring scientific staff is expected, as well as very good German and English skills (at least B2). Experience in acquiring third-party funding is an advantage.
