Position Description

The Johns Hopkins University's Department of Mathematics invites applicants for one or more positions as Postdoctoral Fellow. Candidates must have completed their PhD prior to the appointment start date. The appointment is for one year, with a possible extension pending additional grant funding. The appointment start date is negotiable, with a wide range of start dates possible, and the position may be held remotely.

The successful candidate will be part of the team working on the grant “Proof assistants for formalization of higher category theory.” Specific work will involve the formalization of results from (infinity,1)-category theory in the candidate’s choice of various computer proof assistants — Lean, Rzk, and Agda — continuing ongoing formalization efforts. The candidate will collaborate with Emily Riehl and assume a leadership role in expanding the formal theory of (infinity,1)-categories.

Prior experience in computer formalization and some background in higher category theory are essential qualifications for this project.

Applicants are asked to submit a standard AMS coversheet, a CV in any format, a 1–3 page cover letter describing their qualifications and interest in the proposed project, and one letter of reference. Applications received by June 30, 2026, will be given full consideration. Candidates should contact Prof. Riehl via email (eriehl@jhu.edu), with a message containing "Postdoctoral Fellow" in the subject line and indicate any overlap of research interests with Prof. Riehl.

Salary range: $82,000 min. annually, depending on qualifications and experience.
