Position Description
The Department of Algebra at Charles University in Prague offers a position of Assistant Professor, who would strengthen our department in one of the existing research areas, that is in general algebra, algebraic geometry, number theory or mathematical logic, including their computational applications.Candidates from all the above areas can apply. In the case of equivalent candidates, preference will be given to those who would strengthen the department in the area of algebraic geometry or number theory, or who would professionally contribute to the provision of the study program Mathematics for Information Technology, especially in the areas of cryptography or algebraic computational methods.
The successful candidate is expected to continue active scientific activity, apply for grant support, teach basic and elective courses and conduct qualification theses.
The position is advertised for 3 years with the possibility of extension. The ability to communicate in the Czech language is expected within five years of joining (i.e. before negotiations on the second extension of the contract). In the case of successful habilitation (a formal procedure to become an associate professor) no later than 9 years from admission, a contract for an indefinite period is usually offered.
Expected starting date is February 1, 2027 or September 1, 2027, but in exceptional cases it is possible to arrange another date.
The Faculty of Mathematics and Physics at Charles University is the leading institution in mathematics in Czechia, with highly motivated and well-educated students in our mathematics programs. The School of Mathematics has about 100 academic positions, and more than 30 international postdocs, covering most of the major areas of mathematics.
The Department of Algebra, where the position will be hosted, offers an open-minded international environment, with outstanding conditions for independent research. We currently have about 15 permanent and 15 postdoctoral positions, with most of the latter positions held by international researchers and funded by external grants.
