Position Description

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Idaho State University invites applications for a full-time, nine-month, tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor position in Statistics, with an anticipated start date of August 2027. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, conducting high-quality, peer-reviewed research, and contributing to the development of the statistics curriculum in areas aligned with their expertise. The candidate is also expected to establish a collaborative and interdisciplinary research program that enhances and complements the research activities of faculty across the College of Science and Engineering. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers a Bachelor’s degree and Minor in Statistics; an Undergraduate Certificate in Actuarial Science; a Graduate Certificate in Applied Statistics; a Bachelor’s degree in Artificial Intelligence Sciences; a Bachelor’s degree and Minor in Mathematics; and a Minor in Applied Mathematics. The department also participates in a college-wide PhD in Engineering and Applied Sciences.

The department provides courses in statistics, mathematics, and applied mathematics that serve students in many fields, including engineering, education, health professions, business, and the sciences. A small student-to-faculty ratio affords close interaction with students. We also maintain a highly trained and research-active faculty with a balanced commitment to teaching, research, and service, which conducts research in statistics, pure and applied mathematics, and mathematics education.  The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is currently home to 11 tenured or tenure-track faculty, 11 full-time instructional faculty, and several adjunct instructors.

The key responsibilities of this position are to teach introductory and advanced level statistics and data science courses, conduct interdisciplinary research, supervise graduate and undergraduate students, and provide service to the department, the college, the university, the community, and the profession. Appointment at the associate professor rank may be considered based on the candidate’s record of teaching, research, and service. This is a tenure-track, untenured position. Candidates with prior tenure-track experience may be eligible to negotiate credit toward tenure at the time of hire, subject to approval by the dean and provost.

Minimum Qualification 

A Ph.D. in Statistics, Biostatistics or a closely related field must be completed prior to the start date of the appointment. This position is not eligible for new visa sponsorship at this time. Candidates who already hold valid U.S. work authorization may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience or potential in teaching introductory and advanced level statistics and data science courses
• Experience or potential to contribute to the development of a data science curriculum
• Experience, or demonstrated potential in, teaching online courses in synchronous, asynchronous, and/or hybrid formats
• Experience or potential to develop and teach asynchronous online graduate statistics courses for students in health sciences professional programs
• Demonstrated interest and experience in effectively teaching and mentoring students with a variety of needs
• An established, strong publication record or demonstrated potential to maintain a productive research program
• Evidence of the potential and interest in collaborative research
• Experience or potential to obtain external funding
• Experience or potential in statistics or data science consulting
• Demonstrated commitment to service and outreach
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Expertise that complements the strengths of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics

Salary will be between $90,000 and $98,000 per year, commensurate with education and experience.
