Description
Located in the vibrant community of Walla Walla, WA, Whitman College is home to an intellectually diverse, dynamic, and supportive community of some 500 staff and faculty serving roughly 1,500 students from the local region and across the globe. With exceptional students, accomplished faculty and staff, and engaged alumni, Whitman College continues to build on its national reputation for academic excellence as one of the top undergraduate, liberal arts colleges in the country.
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Whitman College seeks applicants for a tenure-track position beginning August 2027 at the rank of assistant professor. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Mathematics by the start of the position.
The successful candidate will teach lower-level courses (e.g., calculus, linear algebra, differential equations) for broad audiences, upper-level courses in the candidate's area of interest, upper-level courses that support our existing majors, and they will also occasionally teach in the college's interdisciplinary first-year seminars program. The ability to teach Abstract Algebra and/or data-related courses is a plus. The standard annual teaching load is five courses. The department offers majors in mathematics, statistics and data science, and combined majors in mathematics-computer science, mathematics-economics, and mathematics-physics. In addition, we have an interdisciplinary minor in data science.
Members of the department have flexibility in designing new courses or modifying existing courses, and we encourage development of coursework in our specific disciplines or interdisciplinary courses. During the Fall semester, each faculty member supervises one or two senior math majors to assist the students with their senior projects; these projects sometimes result in original student-faculty research. The College provides a generous pre-tenure sabbatical leave program and professional development support for both research and teaching. The successful candidate will demonstrate potential to sustain an active scholarly agenda and to participate in faculty governance, mentorship, or other forms of service in ways that fit their interests and talents.
Members of the department are actively engaged in working with curriculum, mentoring students, and developing community outreach with a focus on inclusive excellence. More broadly, the division of mathematics and sciences continues to develop innovative support systems to make STEM accessible to students of all backgrounds. There is an expectation that a future colleague would share a similar commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and antiracism.
Whitman College is committed to fostering an inclusive learning community that values diverse identities, experiences, and perspectives. In the cover letter, candidates should describe their interest in teaching undergraduates, majors as well as non-majors, at all levels of instruction. In doing so, candidates should address how their classroom and scholarly practices will advance equity and inclusion in the learning environment.
To apply, go to https://apply.interfolio.com/190863. The online application will prompt you to submit all of the required materials: a cover letter; curriculum vitae; separate statements addressing the candidate's teaching interests and scholarly agenda; contact information for three references; graduate transcripts; and evidence of demonstrated or potential excellence in undergraduate instruction.
Review of applications will begin November 1, 2026.
Salary Range: $74,600 - $81,500
