Canada Impact+ Emerging Leaders Position in
Mathematical Ecology and Biology
Department of Mathematics and Statistics
University of Victoria

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Victoria invites applications for a Canada Impact+ Emerging Leaders Position in Mathematical Ecology and Biology (see https://www.canada.ca/en/impact-plus-chairs/program-details/competition/2026/apply.html). If awarded, this is a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, to commence July 1, 2027. This position is for candidates working in alignment with the Federal Strategic Priority “environment, climate resilience and the Arctic.”

The Canada Impact+ Emerging Leaders program is a $120 million investment to help institutions bring more internationally based early career researchers (ECR) to Canada. This program is administered by the Tri-agency Institutional Programs Secretariat (TIPS). The Emerging Leaders position is associated with an Eddie Goldenberg Research Chair of Canada and is valued at an additional $100,000 per year over six years. A possible six-year extension at the same annual amount may be available. The extension is contingent upon confirmation that the recruited ECR has progressed in their academic career and that the research conducted since recruitment has been transformational, translational, and has attracted external partners.

Canada Impact+ Emerging Leaders funding is intended for exceptional early career researchers (ECR). Candidates must be within five years (minus eligible delays) of the start date of their first research-related appointment, defined as an appointment where the individual has the autonomy to conduct research independently. All eligible delays in research (e.g., maternity, parental, medical, bereavement) are credited as twice the amount of time taken. Professional leaves (e.g., training, sabbatical, administrative) are not credited as eligible leaves. Only candidates who are internationally based (both working and residing outside of Canada) as of July 1, 2026 are eligible. Applicants must state in their cover letter that they meet the criteria for an ECR and that they were located outside of Canada as of July 1, 2026.

Applications are welcome from candidates working on the application of mathematical ecology and biology to environment and climate resilience.

Salary Range

The candidate's qualifications, experience and overall market demand will determine a candidate’s final salary offer. The salary for this position includes a competitive salary range of $110,000 - $130,000.UVic is committed to offering an equitable and competitive salary, inclusive of a generous benefits package, eligible leaves and pension plan.

The University of Victoria provides an excellent and active research environment. As a member of the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences (PIMS), UVic provides excellent opportunities for collaboration and postdoctoral support. UVic currently co-hosts a new PIMS Research Network in mathematical biology (Maud Menten Institute). The Department itself is very active in research areas within, or intersecting with, mathematical ecology and biology. These include mathematical epidemiology and physiology, as well as partial differential equations, nonlinear dynamical systems, and biostatistics. The successful candidate will find a supportive, diverse, and intellectually challenging academic environment at the University of Victoria, with ample opportunity to build collaborative interactions, both within the Department and with other departments.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in a relevant field and be suitable to work in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. The successful candidate will have a strong record of research with demonstrated potential for establishing an internationally recognized research program, as demonstrated, for example, by a solid publication record in highly ranked peer-reviewed journals, and will have the potential for synergy with existing research themes in the Department. The successful candidate will be expected to supervise graduate students and postdoctoral fellows and will demonstrate excellence or potential for excellence in graduate and undergraduate teaching and mentoring, so as to maintain and enhance the Department’s high teaching standard. Please note that the requirement for the candidate to hold a PhD is a requirement of the University of Victoria and not the Impact+ Program.

Applications should be made through this ad. A complete application will include:
  • a cover letter detailing interest in, and experience pertaining to, the position;
  • a research statement;
  • a curriculum vitae;
  • a one-page statement that describes the applicant’s experience with attracting and mentoring a diverse group of students, trainees and research personnel, and establishing an equitable and inclusive research environment, as well as a plan for establishing and maintaining a diverse core team and an inclusive research environment; and
  • a teaching dossier.

Applicants should arrange for at least four letters of reference to be posted to mathjobs.org in support of their application. At least one reference letter should address the applicant’s teaching and mentoring abilities. Questions about this position are welcomed and can be addressed to the Chair of Mathematics and Statistics at chairms@uvic.ca.

Please note that reference checks will be done, and background checks, including credential and degree verification, may be undertaken as part of this recruitment process.

The Department recognizes that life circumstances such as illness, disability, family and community responsibilities (e.g., maternity leave, parental leave, leaves due to illness, leaves due to caring for family members, slowdowns due to chronic illness or disability, or COVID-19 impacts) are often an expected part of life and are likely to have an impact on a nominee’s record of research achievement, and that these impacts will be taken into careful consideration during the assessment process. The Department encourages applicants who have experienced career interruptions for parental or other types of leaves to apply (see https://www.canada.ca/en/research-coordinating-committee/priorities/support-early-career-researchers.html for information on how career interruptions affect Early Career Researcher eligibility).

To safeguard research in academia, the Government of Canada has implemented the Policy on Sensitive Technology Research and Affiliations of Concern (STRAC) and the National Security Guidelines for Research Partnerships (NSGRP). These Research Security policies apply to the Emerging Leaders program. UVic recommends applicants to review these policies to ensure alignment with Research Security considerations of research funding programs. Vetting of shortlisted candidates will be integrated into the adjudication process for this competition. When awarded the Emerging Leaders position, the successful applicant must not have any active affiliation with any entity on Canada’s List of Named Research Organizations (NRO) of concern and must maintain this status throughout their tenure as Emerging Leader.

Review of applications will begin on November 23, 2026 and will continue until the position is filled. The closing date of the posting is November 23, 2026. Results are expected by February 2027.
