TWO ASSISTANT PROFESSORS IN GEOMETRIC AND TOPOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF DATA AND ALGORITHMS

JOB DESCRIPTION

We are seeking a new colleague who is passionate about scientific research and education. Our department is looking for mathematicians with a proven expertise in geometric and topological aspects of data and algorithms. This topic can be interpreted in a wide sense: we are interested in analytical, statistical, probabilistic and combinatorial ideas to deepen our understanding of the relation between geometric and topological ideas on the one hand, and data science and its algorithms on the other hand. Concrete subject fields include stochastic geometry, topological (methods in) data analysis, geometric aspects of statistical learning, reconstruction of manifolds from data, equivariant deep neural networks, and applications of these. Other combinations of geometry/topology and data/algorithms are also a possibility.

In this position, you develop their own research line. The position of Assistant Professor is initially a tenure track position for five years. After four years, based on transparent criteria, we will take a decision on the tenure. The preferred starting date is on or before September 1, 2022.

Your duties

you develop a research line in the broad area covering geometric and topological aspects of data and algorithms you complement existing research activities in the department you contribute to the teaching of the department, at both the undergraduate and graduate level you show academic leadership, nationally and internationally you participate in departmental activities and tasks, including writing grant proposals

REQUIREMENTS

you have a PhD in mathematics, for example in the fields mentioned above, with a few years of postdoctoral experience you have a strong research record, as witnessed by excellent publications, original research projects, and an international network you are an inspiring lecturer you have good communication and execution skills you are fluent in English you have a basic teaching qualification (‘BKO’), as required by Dutch universities, or equivalent. If not, you are willing to obtain this qualification

WHAT ARE WE OFFERING?

A challenging position in a socially involved organisation. Based on full-time employment, and depending on experience, the gross monthly salary ranges from €3807 to €5922 in accordance with Dutch academic salary scales 11, or 12. The job profile (Assistant professor or “Universitair docent”) is based on the Dutch university job ranking system and the position is available for 0.8-1.0 FTE. For exceptional, experienced candidates an appointment as associate professor is a possibility.

The appointment will initially be for 5 years (tenure track). After a satisfactory evaluation of the initial appointment, the contract will be extended indefinitely.
