Position Description

Postdoc in Mathematical control theory for PDEs

Professor Roberto Guglielmi (Applied Mathematics) at the University of Waterloo invites applications for a Postdoctoral position in his research group.

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher with expertise in mathematical control theory for Partial Differential Equations (PDEs). The candidate is expected to be able to contribute to the research directions of the DySCO Lab, in particular on the connection between stochastic and deterministic optimal control for infinite dimensional systems.

The candidate will be involved in publishing research findings in scientific journals, presenting them at national and international conferences, and supporting a vibrant research team, which currently consists of one postdoctoral fellow, three PhD candidates and six Master’s students. The candidate is also expected to contribute to the supervision of the younger fellows of the team.

The position is guaranteed for one year, with possible extension subject to funding availability.

The University of Waterloo provides an exceptional environment for cutting-edge research and interdisciplinary collaboration, with world-leading research in applied mathematics.

The salary range for this position is $60,000 to $65,000/year with no teaching duties (the position comes with the possibility to teach one course if desired with appropriate remuneration).

The successful candidate will join our interdisciplinary team and work closely with the researchers involved in the project.

Requested background knowledge:

• PhD in Applied Mathematics or related fields

• High level/experience in Control and optimization

• Proven experience in Partial Differential Equations and Numerical Analysis

• Computational skills to develop computational codes (Python and MATLAB)

• Familiarity with Machine Learning techniques to solve PDEs is a plus

• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in an international and interdisciplinary team

• Excellent knowledge of English (oral/written)

Candidates should submit a cover letter and curriculum vitae. Applicants should also arrange for three letters of recommendation.

We appreciate all replies to this advertisement, but only applicants under consideration will be contacted.

Application Deadline: Interested candidates are invited to submit their applications via the mathjobs portal by Friday, January 31, 2025.

Screening of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. All applications received by January 31 will be given full consideration.
