Assistant Professor of Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB) invites applications for a tenure-track position in Mathematics at the Assistant Professor level to commence in August 2018. The successful candidate will use evidence-based pedagogies to teach and develop curriculum in the Mathematics major and minor. He/she will also build a research program and develop opportunities for students to conduct research and participate in internships to support CSUMB’s strong commitment to student success.

CSUMB will be implementing a new co-requisite model where under-prepared students are able to enroll in a general education mathematics course with the requirement they also enroll in a corresponding developmental course that provides the additional academic support needed to be successful. The successful candidate will collaborate with other mathematics faculty to oversee the co-requisite components and monitor their efficacy in meeting the needs of underprepared students.

College of Science




  • Taking a leadership role in overseeing the co-requisite components of introductory mathematics courses and working closely with faculty to evaluate the effectiveness of co-requisite courses for under-prepared students who are also enrolled in CSUMB Mathematics/Quantitative Reasoning general education courses.
  • Teaching both lower and upper division undergraduate mathematics (with the possibility of teaching graduate courses in the future).
  • Practicing active-based learning and evidence-based pedagogies in their teaching and course redesign and development.
  • Serving on department and university committees.
  • Engaging in research activities, potentially including research about student success in introductory mathematics courses.
  • Engaging in service to the community.
  • Fostering and overseeing undergraduate research in mathematics.
  • Advising and mentoring students.


  • Ph.D. in Mathematics or Ph.D. in Mathematics Education with an M.S. in Mathematics, from an accredited doctoral program at the time of appointment
  • Demonstrated excellence in mathematics teaching, particularly at the undergraduate level.
  • Interest in mentoring undergraduate research and/or internships.
  • Interest in strengthening introductory mathematics courses to increase student success, especially for underprepared students.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated scholarship and active research in mathematics.


We are open to candidates with varied specializations in mathematics, and have a particular interest in the following qualifications:

  • Experience in teaching underprepared college students.
  • Experience in conducting research on redesigning and evaluating the efficacy of introductory college mathematics courses.
  • Experience in mentoring and teaching students from diverse cultural, ethnic, educational, and economic backgrounds.
  • Experience in mentoring undergraduate research and/or internships.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with others.


The person holding this position is considered a “mandated reporter” under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
