The Department of Statistics and Probability (STT) at Michigan State University (MSU) plans to fill one tenured faculty position, to begin in August 2019. Rank of Associate Professor or Full Professor will be commensurate with qualifications.

Exceptional candidates are sought in applied probability and related areas. Priority areas include exact distribution theory, statistical inference for stochastic processes, financial mathematics, stochastic control, optimal stopping, and time series analysis. A typical candidate will be an early- or mid-career scholar with an exceptional record of publications in first-tier probability and statistics journals and/or of funding from federal sources, in several of these areas. A nationally established record of excellence is essential. Evidence of international reach is desirable, and strength in this area is essential for the rank of Full Professor. Exceptional candidates in other areas of the statistical sciences and probability will be considered. Evidence of past work and/or plans for real-world applications including data analysis will be appreciated. Potential areas of application include, but are not limited to, the environmental sciences and climate change, human medicine, operations research, quantitative finance, and actuarial science.

A doctorate in statistics or in a closely allied discipline is required. In addition to an exceptional research program, candidates are expected to provide evidence of high-quality teaching in undergraduate and/or graduate level statistics courses.

Online application is required. To complete the online application, please go to https://www.mathjobs.org/. Applications should include a cover letter, a full CV, a statement of research achievements and plans of no more than 4 pages, not including references, and a teaching statement of no more than 2 pages, all in a single PDF file. Since this is a position with tenure, for all applicants, a list of no more than 10 and no less than 5 names of references should be included as the last pages of the CV. Reference letters from no more than 5 individuals from this list will be obtained by STT at MSU for any finalist for this position. It is recommended that the number of current collaborators (papers published with the candidate in the past 3 years) be minimal in this list. All members of this list should already be tenured, and should all be full professors for applications at that rank.

Applications received by Nov 30, 2018 will receive full consideration, but the search will continue until the position is filled. Evaluation of candidates will begin immediately. Questions regarding the position may be directed to Prof. XIAO Yimin, Chair of the search committee, at xiaoyimi@stt.msu.edu.
