DESCRIPTION
MSRI will award 6 to 8 semester-long postdoctoral fellowships in its program in Mathematical and Computer Science of Market and Mechanism Design, which will be held August 21, 2023 to December 20, 2023.

The fellowship stipend is currently $9,000 per month, with a travel subsidy for one round-trip from your current institution to the Bay Area, and a research travel budget of $600 for one semester. Health, dental and vision insurance is also provided. Postdoctoral fellows cannot receive any other monetary compensation during their PD fellowship at MSRI.

In addition, MSRI's postdoctoral program has some endowed fellowships.  There is no need to apply separately for these positions, which carry a monthly stipend of $11,000 per month.  Awards will be made competitively, from nominees submitted by the organizing committee of the program.

ELIGIBILITY

Postdoctoral Fellows must hold a PhD in math, computer science, economics, or other closely relevant field at the time of their proposed residency. The PhD must have been awarded on or after August 31, 2018. MSRI requires Postdoctoral Fellows to be in residence for the duration of the program.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

MSRI/SLMath is employing a new, experimental application procedure for these positions. This will require some unconventional materials, including some that we ask you to make anonymous. This may require additional time from you, compared to other postdoctoral applications, and we appreciate your efforts. Please be sure to carefully review the requested application materials below and address the prompts responsively so that your application receives full consideration.

A - Required Anonymous Materials:

Please prepare a single PDF with responses to the following three prompts.  We ask that you do not include any identifying information, such as your name, your educational institution, the names of journals where your papers have been submitted or published, or the names of your advisors or collaborators.

A1) Your Own Work. Tell us about 1-2 of your own (solo or co-authored) projects or results in the last five years. Write up to two paragraphs about the main idea for each project/result.

Note: This should be broadly readable by researchers interested in the program topic. Do not include any names or bibliographic information of the project/result.

A2) Work of Others. Tell us about 1-2 projects/results by other people in the last five years that inspire or excite you. (Feel free to cite other people by name.)  Write up to two paragraphs about the main idea of each result that helps us understand why you find it to be engaging and fruitful.

A3) Statement of Interest. We are committed to creating an actively engaged research community at this program.  Write a short statement (up to one page) that expresses your interest in this MSRI/SLMath program. As part of this, please describe any relevant past experience building community in mathematics, computer science, or related fields.

This can include, but is not limited to, the following: (a) seminars that you founded or actively participated in; (b) mentoring activities that you have benefited from as a mentor (or a mentee); (c) ways that you have sought out collaborations; (d) your activities that are aimed at broadening participation in STEM; (e) other inclusivity efforts in academia that you have found to be effective.

B - Standard Required Materials

Unlike the materials for Part A, these are expected to have your name and other identifying information.  We understand that some of this material may seem repetitive with the anonymous materials, but it will be initially screened by a different set of reviewers.

1) CV
2) List of publications
3) Brief (at most 1 page) research statement related to program topic
4) Three letters of reference (provided by reference writers)

Deadline: Applications must be complete, including three letters of reference, by December 1, 2022.

NSF POSTDOCS

Junior researchers who will be in their second or third year of an NSF postdoctoral fellowships are not eligible to apply for an MSRI postdoctoral fellowship. Such researchers are welcome to apply for a regular research membership, specifying that they are an NSF postdoctoral Fellow.

Simultaneous NSF Postdoc applicant: For junior researchers who are simultaneously applying for a postdoctoral fellowship at the NSF and at MSRI, the following rules apply:

  • The NSF application must include MSRI as a possible site for research
  • As part of the NSF application, the proposed mentor must describe in his/her letter of support why and how being at MSRI for the duration of the program would be beneficial to the postdoctoral fellow
  • The MSRI application must mention the separate application to the NSF
