The Department of Mathematics within the Eberly College of Science at The Pennsylvania State University invites applications for a dynamic, innovative, and visionary leader for the position of Department Head. The position is open to candidates that have a PhD in mathematics, or a related field, and credentials for appointment as a full professor. Some previous leadership experience in academic or professional environments is desirable.

The Department of Mathematics at The Pennsylvania State University is among the oldest, largest, and most respected departments in the nation, and is recognized for its exceptional record of leadership in the community. The department serves an integral role in advancing the strategic priorities of the Eberly College of Science and the disciplinary and related sciences through its vibrant research, important contributions to undergraduate and graduate education across the University, and through outreach programs.

The department is a leader in promoting novel, innovative and engaging teaching pedagogy, with strategies that emphasize student equity, and it is responsible for teaching critical core mathematics courses for majors across the University. The collaborative research program brings together scientists from across many disciplines and the department houses several interdisciplinary research centers and groups. Research areas span algebra and group theory, materials science, dynamical systems and ergodic theory, fluid mechanics, functional analysis, mathematical biology, mathematical logic and foundations, mathematical physics, number theory and combinatorics, numerical analysis, partial differential equations, probability theory and stochastic processes, social science, economics and optimization, and other areas of study.

Reporting to the dean, the department head provides visionary leadership to all aspects of the departmental mission, is the representative of the department to senior leadership across the University and is responsible for ensuring the fiscal health of the department, including securing the necessary resources to successfully implement its strategic priorities and mission. To succeed in these objectives, the department head must be a collaborative and inspiring leader who is committed to promoting excellence and cohesion across all aspects of the department. They must have a collaborative approach to expand the reach of the department by building relationships with other programs, departments, and institutes throughout the University, with the University leadership, and with external stakeholders. The head must be committed to high-quality undergraduate and graduate education, have a proven track record of excellence in teaching and research, and act as a champion for the diverse set of teaching, research, and outreach programs in the department. A commitment to mentoring students, postdocs, faculty and staff is essential.

Applicants should be able to demonstrate a commitment to fostering diversity, equity, inclusive excellence in the classroom, department, and the University. Evidence of prior successful and high-impact initiatives in this regard is desirable.
