JOB PURPOSE:

The University of Wyoming (UW) is seeking to fill a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in new tools and novel approaches for enabling applications of AI/ML and Big Data. This position is part of a three-faculty cluster hire in the School of Computing around Applied Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML) and Big Data, in partnership with other named academic departments. The other positions advertised in the cluster hire are targeted around the broad areas of STEM applications of AI/ML and Big Data and applications of AI/ML and Big Data in the social and behavioral sciences and humanities. We seek a faculty hire who will catalyze interdisciplinary collaboration, attract significant external research funding, and enrich our undergraduate and graduate students’ experience.

The academic appointment and tenure home will be in the School of Computing, with a joint appointment with one of the partnering academic units listed below. The successful candidates are expected to teach courses that include computing in their own discipline as well as general computing across disciplines; mentor undergraduate, MS and PhD research scholars; and contribute to the School’s impact across Wyoming via initiatives in economic development, social entrepreneurship, outreach, and other engagement strategies. The successful candidate will play an integral role in establishing the culture, teaching, research, and engagement activities of the School of Computing, and in enabling close engagement and collaboration between the School of Computing and their partnering academic departments.

The School of Computing is a new academic unit at the University of Wyoming that focuses on the application of computing in and across all disciplines, and on delivering new academic programs that provide students with important computing and digital skills across all disciplines including supporting Digital for All. The School will be fundamentally interdisciplinary, using translational research to leverage new and critical computing technologies for solving grand challenge problems in science and society. The School of Computing’s hiring plan over the next five years includes new tenure track faculty, many of whom will have joint appointments with other academic units. The School currently hosts some 33 Founding Adjunct Faculty from across the university, has in place an Internal Advisory Board representing over a dozen academic areas, and is preparing undergraduate degree programs in Computing, Data Science, and Applied Software Development. The School is currently recruiting several research scientists to support its research and strategic initiatives and will have programs for undergraduate and graduate computing students in addition to visiting scholars.

The University of Wyoming has significant resources to support research computing and data science, including a long-term collaboration with the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and the NCAR-Wyoming Supercomputer Center through which a significant fraction of resources is reserved for UW use. In addition, the university hosts the Advanced Research Computing Center, the Shell 3D Visualization Center, the Innovation Wyrkshop, and the Wyoming INBRE Data Science Core. The mission for the School of Computing includes serving as a computing hub for faculty, staff and our industry, state, academic and community partners.
