The Department of Mathematics at Clark University invites applications for a tenured associate or full professor to serve as department chair, starting fall 2022.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Mathematics and possess an exemplary research record in the broad area of Geometry with application to Computer Science or the Natural Sciences. They must also have interest or experience in leadership along with requisite skills and abilities, enabling them to inspire and motivate academic faculty and staff, conduct effective interpersonal communication, and be able to organize and manage many diverse tasks and projects. Administrative experience is also highly desirable.

The primary role of the prospective chair is to provide an overall vision for the department in accordance with university goals. Standard responsibilities include encouraging excellence and innovation in teaching, research, and service, promoting the growth of students and the professional development of faculty and staff, supporting a collegial departmental environment, maintaining connections with external communities including alumni, and enhancing diversity, equity and inclusion.

The successful applicant will be encouraged to maintain their own research program alongside the administrative duties. The teaching load is two courses per year. Given the nature of the research field, the chair is expected to promote interdisciplinary collaborations and productive relationships with a variety of entities across the university, and facilitate faculty efforts to obtain grants and other sources of funding.

The department faculty research fields are predominantly in the areas of geometry, analysis and probability. They are committed researchers and teachers, and actively collaborate with faculty at other institutions, including some in nearby Boston. The teaching environment consists of small and friendly undergraduate classes, in the setting of a small urban liberal arts research university. Located in Worcester, Massachusetts, Clark University has been a recognized leader in innovative research and education since its founding in 1887. The Department of Mathematics offers a robust undergraduate program and is working with a variety of departments at Clark to develop programs. Our students participate in original research, and many of our graduates have enrolled in distinguished academic institutions or were hired by leading private companies.
