The Mathematics Program at Lewis University strives toward establishing itself as one of the top regional mathematics programs known for its active and pedagogically innovative faculty and quality graduates. Lewis comprises of an active and collaborative faculty who continually work together in order to improve our curriculum and offer opportunities that service our students and community. Our faculty are not afraid to try new things, and all of us are committed to providing quality, student-centered teaching. We use a variety of innovative teaching methods like project-based learning, inquiry-based learning (IBL), discovery learning, mastery grading, tactile activities, flipped classrooms, etc. We have also implemented new general education courses that are specifically designed to be taught using methods beyond traditional lecture. One course, Win, Lose, or Draw, is a math course that teaches probability and analytical reasoning skills using games and a discovery-learning approach. Another course, Storytelling with Data, teaches data analytics and statistics as a project-based course. Additionally, our faculty are also involved in scholarship and regularly give presentations related to our research fields, which include graph theory, abstract algebra, combinatorics, optimization, and mathematical modeling. All of our faculty have worked with at least one student on a research project, and we have had over 50 students conduct independent research projects and present them at regional and national conferences over the past eight years. Since we are interested in innovation and improving our teaching, many of our faculty are also involved in Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) projects to help us assess the effectiveness of our innovative techniques. Engaging in service to our local community and the general mathematics community is also important to us. We organize and participate in the local Math Teachers’ Circles, run student outreach programs like summer math camps and introductory programming courses, and serve as judges for math and programming competitions. Many of our faculty are active board members of various MAA committees and run mini-courses, paper session organizers, and presenters of pedagogical and mathematical research at conferences.
