The Bay Area Complexity Institute is a startup nonprofit research institution located near San Rafael, CA that specializes in mathematical and computational complexity with multidisciplinary application. You won't find us online just yet; we're still building our team, and this is where you come in.

We're inviting applications for the half-time or full-time position of Research Fellow. The successful candidate will become part of a team that will work closely to build a theory of dynamical complex systems, model example systems computationally, and apply results to physical systems with a focus on organismal evolution.

You must have a working knowledge of graduate-level category theory, measure theory, and probability theory. Bonus points if you are experienced with any of: statistical mechanics, dynamical systems, Markov chains, various theories and models of computation, organismal evolution, or complexity in any formal setting. You must also enjoy research and writing, and have the personality traits of a theory builder rather than a problem solver, but have the skills of both. Perhaps most importantly, you should be excited and passionate about working on a small team to pursue the connection between information-theoretic complexity, thermodynamics and entropy, and the evolution of complexity in cosmology and living systems.

At a minimum, applicants must have a Masters in Mathematics or demonstrable equivalent. Applicants currently in an advanced degree program will receive full consideration. Applicants who are already located in California will receive additional consideration.

Compensation depends on qualifications but is significantly better than average for comparable academic positions. We also feature a fantastic work environment -- our beautiful and peaceful facility overlooks the Bay, and has several walking trails and a lovely and very large outdoor patio area.

Your cover letter should be specific to this posting, and reflect your relevant skills, interests, and enthusiasm. You should also indicate if you are interested in a half-time position, full-time, or both. You must also submit your CV, a research statement, and transcripts from your current or most recent academic program (unofficial ok). Questions or optional supplementary application materials should be sent to We are looking to hire immediately, and applications will be reviewed as they are received.
