Assistant Professor of Mathematics



Two Tenure-track Assistant Professor of Mathematics positions, to begin August 20, 2018.  We are seeking dynamic individuals committed to undergraduate teaching. Opportunities for teaching some online courses exist for interested candidates.



Minimum / Required (must be addressed in the letter of application)

  • Ph.D. in mathematics or applied mathematics required by August 2018

  • Strong interest in undergraduate teaching

Teach an average of 12 credit hours of coursework each semester in lower and upper level courses in mathematics and occasionally lower-level courses in statistics; if desired, teaching lower-level computer science courses might be available. Involvement in curriculum development; research and scholarly activity; academic advisement; course and program assessment of student learning; and service to the department and the university are expected along with other duties as assigned by the department chair. 



The Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Department has 27 full-time members, a strong tradition of excellence in teaching, and a growing program of scholarship and research in mathematics, computer science, statistics, and related areas. The department received the 2008 University of Wisconsin System Regents Teaching Excellence Award for Academic Departments and Programs. The department is committed to student-centered and technology-enhanced instruction. Technology usage includes students working on laptops in the classroom, web enhancements (e.g., course management and on-line homework systems), and interactive distance education courses. Faculty members involve undergraduate students in research and the department has hosted an NSF-sponsored REU site in Mathematics in the past. In May 2016, the department actively contributed to UW-Stout’s hosting of the National Science Olympiad tournament. 


The department offers all the core courses necessary for the Applied Mathematics and Computer Science (~185 students) and Computer Science (~190 students) programs as well as coursework supporting four Engineering programs (~365 students). There are two new concentrations in Scientific Computing and Cyber Security, respectively, available under the Applied Mathematics and Computer Science program. The department also provides service courses (in all three disciplines: statistics, mathematics, and computer science) for the numerous programs within the university.  Typical mathematics class size is about 35 students. The department has recently launched a Master's Degree in Industrial and Applied Mathematics. Some opportunities for teaching graduate students (both from the Master's in Industrial & Applied Math and from several other programs) may be available occasionally.

Menomonie, Wisconsin, is a town of 16,000 located in the beautiful Chippewa River Valley, 25 miles west of Eau Claire and 60 miles east of the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul.
