Tenure-track Assistant Professor of Computer Science/Mathematics position with an anticipated start date of August 21st, 2023. We are seeking a dynamic individual committed to teaching core undergraduate computer science classes, mathematics courses, and/or specialty courses in their research area, based on interest and department needs. Our nationally ranked, ABET-accredited programs offer courses in a variety of specialized areas including Cybersecurity, Applied Mathematics, Actuarial Science, Math Education, IT and Computer Networking, Game Design and Development, Machine Learning/Data Science, Mobile and Web Development, and Software Development.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum / Required • PhD (or equivalent) in computer science, software engineering, mathematics, applied mathematics, or related field required by contract start date. • Commitment to teaching undergraduate courses in computer science. • Evidence of teaching experience in mathematics, computer science, or a related field.

Highly Desired • Demonstrated area of expertise that contributes to teaching cryptography. • Expressed interest in teaching mathematics courses that support cybersecurity (including discrete mathematics, linear algebra, etc.). • Interest in involving undergraduate students in research. • Demonstrated commitment to establishing a climate (work environment) that embraces equity, diversity, and inclusion.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Teaching an average of 12 credit hours of coursework each semester in lower and upper-level courses in computer science and/or mathematics (as needed), involvement in curriculum development, research and scholarly activity, academic advisement, course and program assessment of student learning, and service to the department and the university are expected along with other duties as assigned by the department chair.

DEPARTMENT INFORMATION

The Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science Department offers all the core courses necessary for many programs: • The ABET-accredited Computer Science program ∼459 students • The Applied Mathematics and Computer Science program ∼111 students • The Computer Networking and Information Technology program ∼142 students • The new Cybersecurity program ∼30 students

We also offer coursework supporting the ABET-accredited Computer and Electrical Engineering program (∼181 students) and the Information and Communication Technologies Program (∼119 students).

The Computer Science program’s concentration in Game Design and Development continues to be nationally recognized, ranking 26th in the Princeton Review’s 2022 Top Game Design programs. In addition, UW-Stout is designated as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense by the National Security Agency (NSA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The Computer Science program is nationally ranked in the 30 Most Affordable Residential Bachelor’s Degrees in Computer Science 2021 by computersciencedegreehub.com. A typical computer science or math class size is about 30 students, and we have a robust tutoring staff to support instruction in foundational courses. All students are provided with personal laptops and software to support interactive, hands-on learning.

We are a very inclusive department of 28 full-time members, housed within the College of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Management, with a commitment to diversity, a strong tradition of excellence in teaching, and a growing program of scholarship and research in computer science, mathematics, statistics, and related areas. The department is committed to student-centered and technology-enhanced instruction. Technology usage includes students working on laptops in the classroom, web enhancements (e.g., Canvas course management and online homework systems), and interactive distance education courses. For several years, the department has actively contributed to the Wisconsin Science Olympiad, and in May of 2016, UW-Stout hosted the National Science Olympiad.
