Job Description

The Department of Mathematics & Statistics seek applications for a full-time, tenure track Assistant Professor position to begin in fall semester of 2018. The department seeks a dynamic colleague committed to fostering teaching and research excellence and student development in a program that values creativity, collaboration, learner-centered pedagogy, and diversity.  The successful candidate will teach nine contact hours per semester supporting the BS and MS programs and maintain an active research agenda as manifested by supervision of graduate students, scholarly publications and grant writing. The candidate is expected to collaborate with the faculty in our department and the College of Science and Engineering in applications of mathematics and/or statistics to engineering, natural and environmental systems, coastal and marine studies, etc.  Primary teaching responsibilities will be teaching mathematics/statistics courses at different levels. Other duties include service (both internal in the department and external to campus). The new faculty member will join a collaborative group of 22 mathematics, statistics and mathematics education faculty who serve the entire campus community.

The Department of Mathematics & Statistics in the College of Science and Engineering strives to educate students at the University so that they are prepared to use mathematics intelligently in their chosen fields of study and to understand mathematics as it affects their lives and participation in public affairs. The Mathematics Program grants BS and MS degrees in Mathematics and provides its majors and graduate students with a preparation for careers in mathematics, education, science, and commerce, as well as providing a solid foundation for further study in mathematics. The Department participates in Ph.D. programs offered by the College and we are in the process of developing a new Ph.D. program. Faculty actively supervising PhD students teach six contact hours per semester. Our faculty works in many different areas of research including modeling, differential equations (ODEs, PDEs), machine learning, Bayesian models, statistical genomics,  circular statistics, time series, mathematics education,  applied statistics, nonstandard analysis, and optimal control. We also strive to serve our community by providing expertise to local schools, industry and business. 

Required Qualifications

1. Ph.D. in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics or Statistics. 

2. A research agenda in the areas of mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics, and/or data sciences.

3. The evidence of the effective classroom instruction.   Preferred Qualifications

1. Breadth and depth of mathematical/statistical knowledge.

2. Experience with grant work or grant writing.

3. Publication in scholarly journals.

4. Working with diverse student populations at the college level.

5. Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
