The Department of Mathematics at Union College welcomes applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor (advanced appointments with a shortened tenure clock may be considered in exceptional cases for experienced candidates). The start date for the appointment will be September 1, 2024.

The position is open to candidates who will have a Ph.D. in mathematics or applied mathematics by September 2024, who have strong teaching credentials in undergraduate mathematics, and who have a record of scholarly achievement that suggests a continuing commitment to scholarship. Priority will be given to candidates whose research has strong connections with engineering or computer science. This includes, but is not limited to, different fields of applied mathematics.

At Union, institutional expectations and support are balanced between teaching and research; candidates should demonstrate excellence in both areas. The teaching load is two courses per trimester. The salary range for this position is $80,000-82,000, commensurate with experience. Located in the Capital District of New York State, Union is a selective liberal arts college with academic programs in arts, humanities, natural and social sciences, engineering, and interdisciplinary studies. In 1845, Union College became the first liberal arts institution in the nation to offer a degree in engineering. Today, the College offers degree programs in biomedical engineering, civil engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering, environmental engineering, and mechanical engineering. In addition to the department’s own programs in mathematics, statistics, and financial and actuarial mathematics, our curriculum supports many of the above programs.

The Department of Mathematics and Union College are strongly committed to student and workforce diversity, equity, and inclusion. Union College provides a blend of intellectual, social and cultural opportunities to facilitate the integrated academic, social and personal development of diverse populations and cultures including, but not limited to, those based on race, religion, disability, ethnicity, sexuality, gender identity, national origin, and veteran status. We particularly welcome applications from members of groups that have been traditionally underrepresented in mathematics.

Applicants should submit the following materials online at mathjobs.org.

  • Cover letter. The cover letter should include statements proposing the candidate’s specific approaches to supporting undergraduate research in mathematics, as well as student learning and research in engineering and computer science.
  • Research Statement
  • Teaching Statement. The statement on teaching should also include a summary of recent teaching evaluations and a description of how they were administered.
  • A statement discussing the candidate’s own experiences or goals concerning diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging initiatives, and ways to serve a wide variety of student populations and cultures.
  • Three letters of reference. At least one letter of reference should address teaching qualifications.

To guarantee consideration, application files must be complete by November 15, 2023.
