Title: Head Mentor
Duration: Minimum of 2 years with possibility of extension
Location: Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States
Subject Area: Math and Math Education
Application Deadline: 2018/10/21 (posted 2018/8/15)

Description: The Girls’ Angle Head Mentor is a full-time position who oversees all activities at the Girls’ Angle club, which is where girls, roughly aged 10-18, work directly with mentors to increase their knowledge and understanding of mathematics and their general thinking and problem solving abilities.  Currently, the club meets for 2 hours on most Thursdays during the academic year, but this will likely expand to include a second day during the weekend.

The Head Mentor is actively aware of where all Girls’ Angle club members are in their mathematical development, and is responsible for creating and overseeing activities, exercises, problems, and mathematical investigations for club members, as well as organizing and overseeing a group of mentors (which include college undergraduates, graduate students, and postdocs in math and related fields), and arranging for occasional special visits from professionals who use math in their work.

The Head Mentor coordinates with the Girls' Angle Bulletin (our nonprofit's bimonthly math magazine) editor while producing or overseeing Bulletin content related to club activities, interacts and responds to both parent and teacher inquiries about the club and related aspects of Girls’ Angle, and maintains detailed records pertaining to club activities. The Head Mentor is expected to help with certain educational outreach activities, such as our Math Collaboration program which involves running math events at schools. The Head Mentor will be expected to assist with some of the overall aspects of running a nonprofit which would include but not be limited to fundraising. This component of the job will be kept to a minimum.

The Girls’ Angle Head Mentor position aims to be a professorial position in mathematics whose teaching duties pertain to the K12 level instead of the college/grad level. Thanks to a grant from the Mathenaeum Foundation, Girls’ Angle is able to hire a Head Mentor for a minimum of 2 years.

Girls' Angle aims to build a faculty of mathematicians whose teaching duties pertain to the K12 arena instead of the college/grad level. Applicants must have a doctoral degree in mathematics. If you think to yourself, "I am a mathematician and love mathematics, and would love to work with K12 students, especially girls, to help them grow in knowledge and understanding of mathematics as well as help them to generally become better thinkers and problem-solvers," please consider applying.

Salary and benefits competitive.

For the initial application, applicants should include:
  1. a brief essay describing any relevant qualifications and professional experience;
  2. a brief essay about applicant’s approach to and philosophy of teaching. Please also include a discussion of your views on gender issues in math and math education;
  3. a brief research statement;
  4. a curriculum vitae;
  5. publication list;
  6. at least three letters of reference. Please also include the names and email addresses of the referees in the application.
Candidates of interest will be asked to fulfill a second round of requirements which may include, but not be limited to, an interview, an onsite demonstration of working with the target age group, and acquiring a faculty sponsor from a local mathematics department (do not seek a sponsor until you have received official notice that you are in the second stage of consideration).
