The School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences (SoMSS) at Arizona State University (ASU) invites applications for Postdoctoral Research Scholar positions with an anticipated start date of fall 2020. These full-time academic year, benefits-eligible positions are renewable on an annual basis through spring 2023 contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of resources, and the needs of the university. Applicants must be within five years of receipt of their PhD to be considered for initial appointments and subsequent renewals.

The essential duties of the position will be to conduct research in the mathematical sciences along with a teaching load that is normally three courses per year.

Required qualifications:

  • a Ph.D. in the mathematical or statistical sciences or a closely related area by August 10, 2020
  • demonstrated potential for excellence in research and teaching

Desired qualifications:

  • a documented research record in an area that meshes with the research interests of a current faculty member or group of faculty members (SoMSS has strong research groups in analysis, combinatorics, computational mathematics, differential equations, dynamical systems, geometry, graph theory, mathematical biology, mathematics education, number theory, probability and statistics)
  • demonstrated success working with diverse student and/or faculty populations

SoMSS currently has 60 full-time tenured or tenure-track faculty members and approximately 90 supported Ph.D. students, along with an additional 45 Ph.D. students and 50 Masters students. The School offers bachelors, masters, and Ph.D. programs in applied mathematics, mathematics, mathematics education and statistics as well as undergraduate and masters programs in actuarial science. The school is also leading the development of an interdisciplinary B.S. degree program in data science, which will include courses in computational mathematics and statistics. SoMSS has excellent computing resources that include individual faculty workstations, several high-performance servers and a small cluster, as well as access to the University's central computing facilities and the High Performance Computing Initiative. SoMSS has a strongly interdisciplinary research profile that includes numerous collaborations inside and outside the university, such as in the biological, environmental, medical, physical and social sciences, education, and multiple areas of engineering.  There are numerous opportunities for collaboration with interdisciplinary centers and institutes, such as the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen), the Biodesign Institute (which includes centers specializing in the nanobiosciences, bioengineering, genomics, and vaccinology), the Institute for Social Science Research, the new College of Health Solutions, the Global Institute of Sustainability, and the nearby Mayo Clinic. The escalating interest in data science research throughout ASU will offer further opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration.

The Tempe campus of Arizona State University has approximately 60,000 students. It is located in the rapidly growing metropolitan Phoenix area, which provides a wide variety of recreational and cultural opportunities. The surrounding countryside is very attractive to outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy hiking, biking, skiing, and other activities in the exquisite Arizona canyon lands and mountainous terrain.
