The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Appalachian State University invites applications for a tenure-track, nine-month faculty position in Statistics at the rank of assistant professor beginning August, 2020. 

Job Responsibilities 

The duties of this position include teaching both undergraduate and graduate courses in statistics and/or data science to students of varied mathematical backgrounds and abilities, establishing and maintaining an active program of scholarship, and participating in service activities. The standard teaching load is 18 hours per academic year. Additional duties may include advising students, developing curricula, and teaching online. 

Qualifications 

The minimum qualifications are: 
  • an earned doctorate in statistics, data science, statistics education, or a closely related field (or expected by August 2020) 
  • excellent written and verbal communication skills 
  • experience using technology in the classroom 
  • a clear agenda for scholarship
  • a commitment to, or experience with, educating students of varied mathematical backgrounds and abilities 
Additional areas of interest for the position include the following: 
  • teaching experience at the college level that involves multiple courses or multiple years of experience
  • documented excellence in teaching at the undergraduate or graduate level 
  • evidence or a description of the potential to teach and mentor undergraduates with diverse backgrounds and demographics

  • a scholarship program that involves undergraduate and graduate students

The Department and University 

The Department of Mathematical Sciences consists of 29 tenured or tenure-track faculty, as well as more than 20 full- and part-time non-tenure-track faculty. The department offers undergraduate degrees in actuarial science and mathematics with concentrations in business, computation, life sciences, physical sciences, secondary education, and statistics; and undergraduate certificate programs in data science and in sports analytics. The department also offers a master's degree with concentrations in college teaching and secondary education. The department currently has about 250 undergraduate majors and 15 graduate students.
