The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Appalachian State University invites applications for one tenure-track, nine-month faculty position at the rank of assistant or associate professor beginning August, 2020. Job Responsibilities


The duties of this position include teaching undergraduate courses supporting the Actuarial Science major and other courses supporting the department’s mission, establishing and maintaining an active program of research or other scholarly activities, and participating in service activities. The standard teaching load is 18 hours per academic year.

Service related to the actuarial science program may include advising and mentoring actuarial students, developing curricula, developing and maintaining professional relationships, and other ongoing program related activities.




The minimum qualifications include:


  • a Masters degree in Actuarial Science or closely related field for Fellows of a professional actuarial society; or an earned doctorate in Actuarial Science or a closely related field for non-Fellows who have passed at least 3 actuarial exams
  • the potential for quality teaching and mentoring
  • the potential for quality research or other scholarly activities 
  • excellent written and verbal communication skills

The Department and University


The Department of Mathematical Sciences consists of 29 tenured or tenure-track faculty, as well as more than 20 full- and part-time non-tenure-track faculty. The department offers undergraduate degrees in actuarial science and mathematics with concentrations in business, computation, life sciences, physical sciences, secondary education, and statistics. The department also offers a master’s degree with concentrations in college teaching and secondary education. The department currently has about 250 undergraduate majors and 15 graduate students.
