The College of Arts & Sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) seeks an innovative, visionary and inclusive leader to Chair the Department of Mathematics. The Department of Mathematics offers B.S. and M.S. degrees in Mathematics, and a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics. Research in the Department covers the areas of analysis and partial differential equations, computational mathematics and numerical analysis, differential equations and mathematical physics, differential geometry and geometric analysis, dynamical systems and ergodic theory, probability, and topology. The Department has approximately 20 faculty members, 100 undergraduate majors and 40 graduate students, and serves a critical and central teaching role in UAB’s core curriculum. The successful candidate will be an accomplished and funded scholar with the administrative experience and vision necessary to lead a Department that emphasizes both cutting-edge research and excellent undergraduate and graduate instruction. The department moved to a newly constructed campus building in summer 2019, and several new faculty hires are expected in the next few years. Candidates must have a Ph.D. degree in mathematics or a closely related discipline, and a distinguished record of research, teaching, and service that merits appointment as a Full Professor with tenure. A record of excellence in the administration and delivery of undergraduate mathematics education is required.

UAB enrollment grew to more than 22,563 students in the fall of 2020, marking a fifth consecutive year of record enrollment and record student retention.
