The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Victoria invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level in Algebra, to commence July 1, 2018.  Appointments at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor may be considered for candidates with experience appropriate for the rank and who have a record of excellence with respect to undergraduate teaching and the training of graduate students and an outstanding record of research contributions by international standards, including high-impact research publications and a demonstrated ability to attract external research funding. 

The University of Victoria provides an excellent and active research environment.  As a member of the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences (PIMS), UVic provides excellent opportunities for collaboration and postdoctoral support.  The Department itself is highly active in research areas that intersect with Algebra, especially with Algebraic Combinatorics, Algebraic Number Theory and Representation Theory among others.  The successful candidate will find a supportive and intellectually challenging academic environment at the University of Victoria.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in the Mathematical Sciences.  The successful candidate will have a research area in Algebra with demonstrated potential for establishing an internationally recognized research program, as demonstrated for example by a solid publication record in highly ranked peer-reviewed journals, and will have the potential for synergy with existing research themes in the Department in Pure and Applied Mathematics and Statistics.  The successful candidate will be expected to supervise graduate students and post-doctoral fellows, and will demonstrate excellence in graduate and undergraduate teaching so as to maintain and enhance the department’s high teaching standard.
