Rank: Assistant Professor Department: Mathematics Starting Date: Fall 2023

The Department of Mathematics at California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning in Fall 2023. We seek candidates who are committed to contributing to student success in learning mathematics at both undergraduate and Masters level and have the potential to engage in a robust research agenda in mathematics in the fields of statistics/data science or applied probability or optimization or numerical linear algebra. Outstanding candidates in closely related fields will be considered. Mathematicians from marginalized populations in these fields, including women and those from other underrepresented groups, are especially encouraged to apply.

CSUSM is located on a beautiful 304-acre hillside 15 miles east of the ocean and in San Diego County, an area known for its growing technology, defense, and cyber industry. Providing access to a high-quality education and educating the work force for local industry are the core of CSUSM’s purpose. With 53 percent of graduates being the first in their families to earn a bachelor's degree, CSUSM was recently ranked number one on the Social Mobility Index by CollegeNET. The campus has also received the 2022 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award— a national honor recognizing U.S. colleges and universities demonstrating an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion for nine straight years. Only 33 years old, CSUSM is in the midst of change which involves the excitement and challenges of an expanding student body and faculty, new buildings and infrastructure, new courses, and new academic programs (e.g., engineering and an applied mathematics track). Our campus embraces 21st century learning and the teacher-scholar model. As such, we offer a reduced teaching load in the first year to support the beginning teacher-scholar in this position. The campus offers hands-on and collaborative learning experiences, innovative technology, and academic programs relevant to the rapidly changing global environment. A STEM Success Center provides support to courses in STEM majors, and a Center for Training, Research and Educational Excellence (CTREE) is dedicated to enriching, enhancing, and supporting STEM education. The University was recently awarded a nearly $5 million grant from the Department of Education’s Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI) STEM Program to support our STEM degree programs as well. The Department of Mathematics has about 130 majors, so most upper-division classes have enrollments of about 30 students. Some lower-division service courses are larger, up to 70 students currently, while graduate courses are smaller with class sizes around 10-20.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: • Ph.D. in mathematics or closely related field. • Research area in statistics/data science or applied probability or optimization or numerical linear algebra or closely related field. • Ability to sustain an active research program in mathematics. • Publications in reputable scholarly journals. • Evidence of successful teaching at the undergraduate level. • Ability to teach courses in mathematics ranging from introductory through Master’s degree level courses. • Interest in supervision of undergraduate and graduate projects and theses with mathematics students. • Ability to contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching, service and a commitment to working in an inclusive environment. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: • Postdoctoral experience. • Demonstrated intercultural competence with diverse groups in teaching, research, and/or service. • Evidence of successful teaching, research, and/or service with diverse populations, especially with historically disadvantaged groups. • Experience with supervision of undergraduate and graduate projects with mathematics majors. • Experience with teaching courses in applied mathematics. • Experience in teaching the use of scientific software. • Research interests that have synergies with expertise of current faculty. • Experience in grant writing and/or implementation.

DUTIES: The successful candidate will be expected to: • Teach a variety of introductory, service, upper division, and graduate courses in mathematics, and to use assessment to improve these. Newly hired faculty will receive two course releases for the first year. • Teach upper-division and graduate courses in applied mathematics. • Mentor graduate students and supervise MS theses. • Maintain a research program in their area of expertise. • Participate in activities serving the department, college, university and community.

APPLICATION: Applications will only be accepted electronically at http://www.mathjobs.org. The application package must include: 1. A letter of interest. 2. A statement of teaching philosophy (1-2 pages), to include teaching interests and experience (including face-to-face and virtual) and use of high-impact practices. 3. A description of research accomplishments and future research goals. (1-4 pages) 4. A statement of your philosophy regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion that addresses how you will engage our diverse student population in your teaching, research, mentoring, and/or advising. (1-2 pages) 5. A curriculum vitae that notes teaching experience and publications. 6. Three signed letters of recommendation (one specifically addressing teaching), to be submitted electronically per instructions found at http://www.mathjobs.org. Please visit our website https://www.csusm.edu/math for more information about our department. Applications will be reviewed starting December 16, 2022.
