The Department of Mathematics at the University of Arizona welcomes applications for Postdoctoral Research Associates I. Subject to the availability of funding, these are three-year postdoctoral positions (non-tenure eligible) with an appointment beginning in Fall 2023. Review is on-going, and the positions will remain open until filled. US citizenship or permanent residency required.

The positions are specific to the Research Training Group (RTG) in Applied Mathematics and Statistics for Data-Driven Discovery at the University of Arizona, which is supported in part by a grant from the National Science Foundation. The RTG seeks postdoctoral researchers with interests at the intersection of modern applied & computational mathematics, statistics & data science, and applications to physical, biological, and engineered systems. The purpose of the RTG is to conduct vertically integrated training in diverse research areas, including (but not limited to) imaging and image processing, high dimensional and complex data analysis and statistical inference, machine learning for data-driven modeling and model reduction in multi-physics dynamical systems, environmental data assimilation and uncertainty quantification, and physiological time series analysis, with an emphasis on the design, analysis, and application of modern machine learning and computational statistics techniques. The RTG conducts training activities year round, including a summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program, offering ample opportunities for mentoring and collaboration.

The work will be carried out at the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona. The candidate is expected to begin employment at the start of Academic Year 2023. Successful candidates will be housed within the Department of Mathematics with close mentoring by an RTG faculty member, a diverse group of UA faculty with wide-ranging interests. Current RTG faculty are Mathematics / Statistics / Applied Mathematics faculty Misha Chertkov (co-PI and Chair, Applied Math Graduate Program), David Glickenstein (co-PI and Director of Graduate Studies, Mathematics), Ning Hao, Leonid Kunyansky, Kevin Lin (PI), Laura Miller (co-PI), Yue (Selena) Niu, Marek Rychlik, Shankar Venkataramani, and Hao Helen Zhang (co-PI and Chair, Statistics Graduate Program), as well as Electrical / Biomedical Engineering faculty Ali Bilgin and Molecular Biology faculty Megha Padi.

Review of applicants will begin on 12/01/2022. Applications will be accepted until the positions are filled.

Outstanding UA benefits include health, dental, vision, and life insurance; paid vacation, sick leave, and holidays; UA/ASU/NAU tuition reduction for the employee and qualified family members; access to UA recreation and cultural activities. Tucson, home to the UA, has all the advantages of a midsize city, Sonoran desert landscape surrounded by high mountains (5,000-9,000 feet elev.), and a day's drive to the Grand Canyon, beaches, skiing, and more. The University of Arizona has been recognized on Forbes 2015 list of America’s Best Employers in the United States and has been awarded the 2015 Work-Life Seal of Distinction by the Alliance for Work-Life Progress! UA is home to a school of data science and interdisciplinary research institutes, including the Data Science Institute, NSF CyVerse for cyberinfrastructure and computing, the Data7 institute, the Bio5 institute, and the Institute for Energy Solutions. As an Employer of National Service, we also welcome alumni of AmeriCorps, Peace Corps, and other national service programs and others who will help us advance our Inclusive Excellence initiative aimed at creating a university that values student, staff, and faculty engagement in addressing issues of diversity and inclusiveness.

Duties & Responsibilities. The successful candidate will be deeply involved in the research mission of the RTG, working closely with mathematical scientists and domain experts. In particular, the candidate will have the opportunity and expectation to work in transdisciplinary teams with researchers in Mathematics, Statistics, and domain scientists, and participate in vertical training of undergraduate and graduate students. We are interested in candidates with an ability to bridge the gaps between scientific endeavors and intellectual disciplines, strong communication and teaching skills, and in helping to train the next generation of mathematical scientists.

The position carries a teaching commitment of 6 units per year, equivalent to two one-semester mathematics courses per academic year, as well as maintaining an active research program. In addition, RTG postdocs are provided a summer stipend to support their participation in RTG summer training activities for graduate and undergraduate students, including our summer REU. Postdocs will have access to a travel allowance throughout their appointment to attend professional meetings.

Minimum Qualifications Applicants should hold a PhD in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, or related discipline by the time of appointment. RTG postdoctoral fellows must be US citizens or permanent residents.

Preferred Qualifications Applicants should have a strong background in applied mathematics, computational science & engineering, scientific computing, and/or statistics, as well as evidence of dedication to effective teaching and interest in mentoring students.

Supplemental support In addition to an academic year salary, RTG postdocs will receive a summer stipend to support their participation in the RTG’s REU program. Suitable applicants, e.g., those whose primary research area intersect physics-informed machine learning, bioinformatics and complex networks, or biological fluid dynamics, may receive supplemental salary from the research grants of RTG faculty.
