TU Delft is looking for scientists with a passion for education

Challenge: Renew and develop high-quality and cutting-edge education

Change: Initiate and contribute to educational innovation

Impact: Create impact through education on students, lecturers and society

JOB DESCRIPTION

The faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (https://www.tudelft.nl/en/eemcs) attaches great importance to excellent education and wants to give this a strong impulse by offering an interesting and challenging academic career to scientists with a passion for education.

- As an assistant/associate professor with emphasis on education, you will primarily play a role in the faculty's educational process and be active in scientific research. You will initiate and contribute to educational innovation that enhances the effectiveness and efficiency of education and its impact on students, lecturers and society.

- In your teaching, you emphasise the links to societal and technological developments and to current scientific research. You are enthusiastic about the latest didactic insights and evidence-based teaching methods. You make well-considered use of these findings in organising your teaching and you test the effectiveness of the innovations introduced with the aid of data.

- You contribute to a collaborative educational culture and an inspiring student-teacher community. You value direct contact with students and are accessible to them. You guide and coach colleagues in their development into good teachers and educational developers. You promote a supportive and inclusive culture for every student and colleague. You make connections between different subjects and with different teachers within the curriculum. You take a leading role in the (re)design of education and assessment.

- In addition to your teaching duties, you will actively participate in research within Mathematics. You will participate in current research projects (possibly in cooperation with other universities or industry), (co-)supervise PhD, master and bachelor students in their research, publish or contribute to publications in leading journals and conference proceedings in your field, and acquire new projects. You are not expected to set up your own line of research or to acquire funding for it.

In this position, the emphasis is on providing, renewing and developing high-quality, cutting-edge education within Mathematics. Depending on your background and experience, you will be responsible for teaching some parts of the Mathematics curriculum, which is provided by the Delft Institute of Applied Mathematics (DIAM) https://www.tudelft.nl/en/eemcs/the-faculty/departments/applied-mathematics. You are invited to take a look where you would fit best.

At DIAM we teach the Applied Mathematics BSc and MSc programmes, as well as mathematics courses within other programmes at TU Delft, and national programmes such as “MasterMath”. Together with other (international) universities, we have also initiated the international joint Master’s programme COSSE (Computer Simulations for Science and Engineering). The department is also very active in innovating mathematics education (PRIME). Moreover, it also runs various MOOCs, among which Pre-University Calculus.

We value the great atmosphere at our institute and pride ourselves on our sense of community and the spirit of “getting things done together”, which we combine with mutual appreciation for individual success.

REQUIREMENTS

- You have a PhD degree in a field relevant to Mathematics.

- You are a passionate and dynamic teacher and have achieved impressive results in the field of education.

- You have an (academic) teaching qualification or are willing to acquire one quickly. You are enthusiastic about, and have knowledge of and experience with, didactic innovations in education.

You realise such innovations with creativity. You are collegial and communicative and have management and leadership skills that enable you to grow into management positions within the educational organisation of TU Delft. In your academic career, you want to combine education and research, with an emphasis on education. Your research expertise fits within Delft Institute of Applied Mathematics. TU Delft is a bilingual organisation. Although an excellent command of both Dutch and English are necessary for optimal performance, a less than perfect command of the Dutch language does not have to be an obstacle to a successful application. We support further development of the Dutch or English language.

FACULTY ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING, MATHEMATICS AND COMPUTER SCIENDE

The Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) brings together three disciplines - electrical engineering, mathematics and computer science. Combined, they reinforce each other and are the driving force behind the technology we use in our daily lives. Technology such as the electricity grid, which our faculty is helping to make future-proof. We are also working on a world in which humans and computers reinforce each other. We are mapping out disease processes using single cell data, and using mathematics to simulate gigantic ash plumes after a volcanic eruption. There is plenty of room here for ground-breaking research. We educate innovative engineers and have excellent labs and facilities that underline our strong international position. In total, more than 1,100 employees and 4,000 students work and study in this innovative environment.
