Position Description: The Department of Mathematics at Cleveland State University has an opening for a Visiting Assistant Professor. The appointment is for one year, with starting date August 19, 2019. The Department of Mathematics offers B.S., B.A., and M.S degrees in Mathematics, and an M.S. in Mathematics with a Specialization in Applied Statistics. The University, College of Sciences and Health Professions, and Department seek to attract an active, culturally and academically diverse faculty of the highest caliber. The successful applicant is expected to carry out an active program of research and to teach undergraduate or graduate courses in mathematics. A typical teaching load for a Visiting Assistant Professor is 18 credit hours over two semesters. 

Minimum Qualifications: A Ph.D. in mathematics, mathematics education, applied mathematics, or statistics earned or anticipated by July 1, 2019; an active research program; strong communication skills. 

Preferred Qualifications: A strong research program; research that fits well with or overlaps with the Department’s existing areas of research strength; a demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring students; experience with innovative methods of instruction and assessment; demonstrated efforts to enhance student engagement and success; ability to teach upper-division or advanced courses in mathematics or statistics; ability to teach middle and secondary mathematics education courses; ability to teach statistics courses; evidence of a substantial contribution to a successful academic event, initiative, or ongoing activity; evidence of effective communication and interpersonal skills; the ability to contribute through teaching to the diversity, cultural sensitivity, and excellence of the academic community. 

Application Requirements: Qualified applicants should submit, electronically at, the following documents: a cover letter that highlights the way in which both minimum and preferred qualifications are met; curriculum vitae; a statement on research; and a statement on teaching practice and effectiveness. Also, candidates will be asked for the contact details of three or more references, who will be asked to provide letters of recommendation. At least one reference should be able to address teaching effectiveness, and at least one should be able to address research. Review of applications will begin on May 22, 2019; applications received before that date will receive full consideration. 

Salary Range: Commensurate with experience and qualifications. This hiring is contingent on maintaining the existing levels of funding from the State of Ohio.
