Junior Research Fellowships 2021

Christ Church, Merton College and St John’s College Oxford

The Governing Bodies of Christ Church, Merton and St John’s Colleges propose to elect in co-operation up to thirteen Junior Research Fellows, in Arts and Science, according to an agreed allocation of subjects between the colleges. The current salary arrangements are listed below:

• Christ Church: salary £25,941 p.a. plus accommodation allowance of £7813 p.a. • Merton: salary £23,754 p.a. plus accommodation allowance of £10,000 p.a. • St John’s: salary £23,754 plus accommodation allowance of £10,560

Please note that the Colleges are reviewing the stipends for this post and may also need to adjust the balance of salary and housing allowance to be paid, but the new combined total will be no less than the total advertised.

The fellowships are tenable either from 1st October 2021 or, exceptionally, with the agreement of the relevant college, from 1st September 2021.

Research Fellows are expected to undertake original research in some branch of the Humanities, Sciences or Social Sciences. They may be asked to undertake a limited amount of teaching. Depending upon their field of study, successful candidates will be based at Christ Church, Merton or St John’s College.

The fellowships are normally awarded to those who are approaching the end of their doctoral research or have submitted their doctoral thesis since 01 October 2019. The successful candidate must have a good Honours degree (either First or 2:1), or for EU/international applicants a qualification equivalent to a good Honours degree and hold, or be close to completion of, a doctorate. Students (such as medical students) whose doctorate interrupted their professional training, should have completed their professional training since 1 October 2019. They must also have research expertise in their chosen field as demonstrated by a completed doctoral thesis and/or published forthcoming books, or articles in refereed journals, as relevant to the candidate’s field; or promise of such achievement, as relevant to the candidate’s field.

Further particulars, details of the allocation of subjects, and instructions about how to apply, may be downloaded from www.merton.ox.ac.uk/vacancies and should be submitted to the college allocated for the subject to which you wish to apply following procedures specified in the further particulars.

The closing date for receipt of applications is 12 noon on Friday 20 November 2020. Shortlisting, interviewing and appointing procedures will be conducted in early 2021.

The colleges concerned are committed to equality of opportunity (details can be found in the further particulars).
