Applications are sought for a committed Post-doctoral Research Fellow to work with Dr Yoav Len conducting research for a EPSRC funded project entitled Tropical geometry and the moduli space of Prym varieties.

The project is concerned with abelian varieties known as Prym varieties. They play a key role in rationality questions for threefolds, construction of compact hyper-Kähler manifolds, and the birational geometry of the moduli of abelian varieties. Despite numerous attempts by various authors, it is not yet known how to fully construct a compact space classifying them, and what the structure of such a space would be. This moduli space comes with a natural map to the moduli of abelian varieties, whose fibres are not well understood. The project, therefore, is concerned with developing and applying tools from tropical and algebraic geometry to compactify this moduli space and study its properties.

The successful applicant will have (or be near to completion of) a PhD in Mathematics with a track record of successful research in algebraic and tropical geometry.

The post is fixed term and available for 36 months starting 1 May 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Further details of the project and informal enquiries may be directed to Dr Yoav Len, email: yoav.len@st-andrews.ac.uk.

Applications are particularly welcome from women, people from the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) community, and other protected characteristics who are under-represented in research posts at the University.

Equality, diversity and inclusion are at the heart of the St Andrews experience. We strive to create a fair and inclusive culture demonstrated through our commitment to diversity awards (Athena Swan, Carer Positive, LGBT Charter, Race Charters and Stonewall). We celebrate diversity by promoting profiles of BAME, LGBTIQ+ staff and supporting networks including the Staff BAME Network; Staff with Disabilities Network; Staff LGBTIQ+ Network; and the Staff Parents & Carers Network.
