Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Applied Algebraic Geometry

The position
UiT The Arctic University of Norway, Faculty of Science and Technology, has a Postdoctoral Research Fellow position vacant from autumn 2022. The position is attached to the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, and the research group in pure mathematics within this department.

The position is a fixed term position for a duration of three years. The position can be assigned teaching and related work for UiT in an amount equivalent up to 20 % of full-time employment. Appointment to the position of Postdoctoral Research Fellow is mainly intended to provide qualification for work in top academic positions. It is a prerequisite that the applicant can carry out the project over the full course of the employment period. No person may hold more than one fixed term position as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the same institution.

The workplace is at UiT in Tromsø. You must be able to start in the position within a reasonable time after receiving the offer.

The Faculty of Science and Technology consists of the following departments: Department of Chemistry, Department of Computer Science, Department of Engineering and Safety, Department of Geology, Department of Mathematics and Statistics, and Department of Physics and Technology. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is a leading research department in algebraic geometry, differential geometry, complex systems modeling, and climate science. It provides education at the bachelor, master, and Ph.D. levels. Around 50 people are employed in the department, at the moment there are 21 PhD positions and 3 postdoctoral positions at the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

The position's field of research
The position will be attached to the project “Symmetry in quantitative and algorithmic real algebraic geometry” (SymRAG) funded by Tromsø Foskningsstiftelse and the Lie-Størmer Center for fundamental structures in computational and pure mathematics (Lie-Størmer Center). The main focus of research will be around round mathematical structures that are fundamental efficient computations, in particular, on the role of symmetry, respectively order, to facilitate and structure computational processes.

Qualifications
The successful candidate for this position will ideally have a background in algorithmic real algebraic geometry or applied algebra. However, also experience in neighboring areas such as, for example, combinatorial optimization, algebraic topology, algebraic statistics, complexity theory will be considered valuable for this position.

For appointment as Postdoctoral Fellow, the applicant requires:
  • Norwegian doctoral degree in the subject area concerned or a corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognised as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree
Qualification with a PhD is required before commencement in the position. If you’re at the final stages of your PhD, you may still apply if you have submitted your PhD thesis for doctoral degree evaluation within the application deadline. You must submit the thesis with your application. You must have dissertated before the start-up date of the position.

Fluency in English is required.

The applicant is asked to include a project proposal. This proposal should draw connections to ongoing research activities in the Algebra group or the Lie-Størmer Center. The proposal should include a progress plan.

In the assessment the main emphasis will be attached to the submitted works and the project proposal for the qualifying work. During the assessment emphasis will also be put on the candidate’s motivation, potential for research, and personal suitability for the position. We are looking for candidates who:

  • Academic works, up to five. The doctoral thesis is regarded as one work.
The applicant may submit up to 5 works that are central to his/her production.

In addition, the applicant shall provide a description of his/her scientific production stating which works he/she considers the most important and shall therefore be the main emphasis of the assessment. A brief description of the other listed works shall also be included to demonstrate depth of production. These descriptions shall be an attachment to the application.

Assessment
The applicants will be assessed by an expert committee. The committee's mandate is to undertake an assessment of the applicants' qualifications based on the written material presented by the applicants, and the detailed description draw up for the position.

The applicants who are assessed as best qualified will be called to an interview. The interview should among other things, aim to clarify the applicant’s motivation and personal suitability for the position. A trial lecture may also be held.

UiT wishes to increase the proportion of women in academic positions. In cases where two or more applicants are found to be approximately equally qualified, women will be given priority.

The remuneration for Postdoctoral research fellow is in accordance with the State salary scale code 1352. A compulsory contribution of 2 % to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund will be deducted.

The successful candidate must be willing to get involved in the ongoing development of their department and the university as a whole.
