Director, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

The American Mathematical Society (AMS) is a nonprofit membership society dedicated to advancing research and connecting the diverse global mathematical community through our publications, meetings and conferences, MathSciNet®, professional services, advocacy, and awareness programs. Society offices are located in Providence RI (headquarters), Pawtucket, RI, Ann Arbor, MI, and Washington, DC.

The Director of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) provides professional expertise, strategic leadership, administrative oversight, and collaborative guidance within the AMS and to the mathematics profession more broadly. Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the Director of EDI will work closely with AMS leadership and serve as a member of select committees. A successful Director of EDI will play a key role in facilitating measurable, effective change in advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion at the AMS and within the mathematics discipline.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work effectively with AMS staff, AMS governance, and the wider mathematics profession to cultivate awareness, relationships, and trust around issues of equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Identify opportunities for the AMS to further our mission to advance the full participation in the mathematics profession. 
  • Advise on and lead EDI initiatives.
  • Lead efforts to examine and understand historical trends and data at the AMS and within the mathematical sciences to support furthering of our EDI efforts. 
  • Lead efforts to connect AMS goals with actions.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to support the design and delivery of EDI content and policy, as well as examine and understand historical trends and data to further our EDI efforts.
  • Engage with multiple AMS committees and governing bodies, including direct support for the AMS Committee on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.
  • Collaborate with Human Resources to enhance our recruitment efforts and to ensure the retention and wellbeing of the AMS' increasingly diverse staff.
  • Participate in strategic planning and other high-level decision-making processes.

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Earned doctorate in a mathematical science or other relevant discipline (or equivalent training in an area that contributes directly to this position).
  • Willingness to maintain a personal professional development program in order to continue personal expertise of emerging best practices related to the many facets of equity, diversity, and inclusion, especially within a mathematical or other scientific environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion in the workplace, and to advancing these values in professional practice.
  • Significant leadership and administrative experience.
  • Familiarity with careers and PhD programs in the mathematical sciences.
  • Experience and familiarity with programs that help women and other historically excluded groups succeed.
  • Prior leadership experience successfully implementing EDI initiatives.

This position is envisioned as a full-time position operating out of AMS headquarters in Providence, RI or our offices in either Ann Arbor Michigan or Washington DC, although we are willing to consider creative alternative approaches to enable the selected individual to maintain their research or teaching program in some way.
