The Mathematics Department at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville seeks exceptional candidates to fill a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor position in the area of Mathematical Biology, starting August 1, 2023. A PhD or equivalent degree in mathematics, applied mathematics, or statistics must be earned by the time of appointment. Postdoctoral experience is preferred. Primary consideration will be given to candidates whose interests overlap somewhat with those of existing Math Biology faculty, but also include different application areas and techniques.  

 

Evidence of potential for excellence in research and high-quality teaching is required. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. The University of Tennessee at Knoxville is the flagship university in the Tennessee state higher education system. Starting salaries for assistant professors in the Mathematics Department are very competitive. The Mathematics Department is a highly active group whose research has been supported by several funding agencies and industry, including AFOSR, ARO, ARL, DOE, NSF, CDC, and NIH. Opportunities exist to collaborate with researchers through the National Institute for Mathematical and Biological Synthesis (NIMBioS) and at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and the Bredesen Center in Energy Science, Data Science and Engineering. The Math Bio research group is both diverse and highly interdisciplinary in its interests, and oversees the mathematical biology concentration within the mathematics PhD program.

 

Knoxville is a vibrant and diverse medium-sized city next to the Tennessee River and Appalachian Mountains in East Tennessee, with Nashville, Chattanooga, Asheville, and Atlanta all within an approximate 3-hour radius. Knoxville has ample opportunity for shopping, numerous cultural attractions, a relatively low cost of living, and is in close proximity to both the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and over 650,000 acres of national forest.
