The Mathematics Department and the Institute for Mathematical Sciences (IMS) at Stony Brook University expect to have several positions available beginning in the fall semester of 2018 contingent on funding availability.  We are looking for several Simons Instructors (a three-year post-doctoral appointment with a competitive salary and reduced teaching), and several Milnor Lecturers (a two to three year post-doctoral appointment in the IMS with reduced teaching and competitive salary).  We also welcome applications from exceptional candidates for a tenure-track and or/tenured faculty positions.  We seek candidates with outstanding research potential and strong commitment to teaching.  Applicants in all fields are encouraged to apply.  Along with mathematics working in areas of traditional interest in the department – which include geometry and topology in many flavors, complex and real analysis, dynamical systems, mathematical physics, and mathematics education – we are also interested in building up in other areas, including algebra, PDE and probability.

Our 1,100 acre campus is home to 24,000 undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students, and more than 13,500 faculty and staff, including those employed at Stony Brook University Medical Center, Suffolk County’s only academic medical center.  The University is a member of the Association of American Universities and co-manager of nearby Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), a multidisciplinary research laboratory supporting world class scientific programs.  The recently established Simons Center for Geometry and Physics, located next to the math building, runs intensive programs on the interface between mathematics and theoretical physics, over one thousand scientists pass through the SCGP annually.  Many opportunities exist for collaborative research, and in some cases, joint appointments can be arranged.

Home to many highly ranked graduate research programs, Stony Brook University is located 60 miles from New York City on Long Island’s scenic north shore.  The Long Island Rail Road connects the Stony Brook Station on campus to midtown Manhattan.
