PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: The Quantitative Skills Specialist is a vital team member in the Center for Academic Success (CAS) who will provide quantitative reasoning support to students, consult with faculty and staff, facilitate peer tutoring for courses which utilize quantitative reasoning skills, and (dependent on university needs and the candidate’s experience) may teach one course per academic year in support of developing students’ quantitative reasoning skills. The CAS takes a collaborative approach to providing holistic academic support for Lawrence University students.

DUTIES: Provide quantitative reasoning skills support to foster students’ academic success. Specifically: Offer individual student meetings and group sessions/workshops to address a wide range of learning styles and needs related to coursework from multiple academic departments (including, but not limited to, mathematics, statistics and data science, computer science, natural sciences, and social sciences) which utilizes quantitative reasoning skills. Manage faculty referrals and communicate with faculty and staff about student concerns. Possibly teach one course per academic year in support of students’ quantitative reasoning (e.g., MATH 103: Preparation for Calculus). Work collaboratively with fellow staff in the CAS, other faculty and staff, and student peer tutors to ensure that students are developing the academic skills to be successful at Lawrence University. Specifically: Collaborate with academic departments to support and further develop a system of quantitative peer-tutoring, including recruitment and training of student tutors. Collaborate with academic departments to execute and possibly expand the ALEKS assessment to provide a baseline diagnostic of entering students’ quantitative skills to inform advising and course placement. Ensure accurate and timely record-keeping, including meeting notes and data regarding participation in programs and initiatives overseen by this role. Make data-informed decisions regarding the work of this position. Participate in events such as new student orientation and represent the CAS as requested at various university events. Participate in professional development activities; continue to enhance professional skills and remain current regarding best practices in the quantitative skills support field. Other duties as assigned by the Associate Dean of Academic Success.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS: Will work collaboratively with Center for Academic Success colleagues, Lawrence University faculty and staff, and students. The Quantitative Skills Specialist manages a small team of student peer tutors who support quantitative skills coursework and works closely with the Associate Dean of Academic Success to ensure the smooth operation of the CAS peer tutoring program. KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED: M.Sc., M.Ed., M.A., or comparable degree in a quantitative field required. Experience teaching at the university level is preferred. Ability to assess students’ quantitative skill development needs and offer appropriate support and resources, as well as make referrals to campus partners. Demonstrated experience with culturally responsive interactions between colleagues and with diverse populations including, but not limited to, domestic and international students of color, LGBTQIA+ students, AAPI and BIPOC students, first generation college students, students with disabilities, and students of various ethnicities, cultures, and religious backgrounds. Exceptional communication, organizational, time management and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated strong work ethic and a willingness to work collaboratively with others, as well as to think and work independently, motivated to find ways to expand programs and resources to a wider audience. Proven commitment to the highest ethical personal and professional standards. Understanding of and appreciation for the value, relevance, and benefits of a liberal arts education, especially one with a strong fine and performing arts component. Knowledge of and experience with some of the following (and comfort with learning the others): ALEKS assessment program, Microsoft 356 (Excel [strong proficiency required], Outlook, Word, Teams, etc.), Canvas or other course management systems, EAB Navigate or other student success programs, Zoom, and Calendly.
