Assistant Professor of Computer Science

Lawrence University, a liberal arts college and conservatory of music in Appleton, Wisconsin, invites applications for a full-time tenure track position as Assistant Professor of Computer Science to begin September 1, 2023. Appointment at the associate level may be considered commensurate with experience. A PhD in Computer Science or closely related field is required by job start date. The Department of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science seeks an excellent teacher who is passionate about working with undergraduates in a liberal arts setting while actively engaging in high-quality research. Candidates should be enthusiastic to teach broadly, including introductory and core courses (e.g., programming, algorithms, data structures) as well as advanced offerings in their particular areas of interest and expertise. Computer scientists from all research areas are encouraged to apply.

Lawrence offers majors in Computer Science, Mathematics, and Mathematics-Economics, as well as minors in Computer Science, Mathematics, and, most recently, a minor in Statistics and Data Science. We encourage innovative pedagogy and curriculum that emphasize computer science’s interdisciplinary connections within and beyond the sciences, and thoughtful, inventive teaching and mentoring to help us create a more inclusive Lawrence. Teaching load is two courses per term for three ten-week terms a year, including participation in Lawrence’s First-Year Studies program on a rotating basis. Ability and desire to lead undergraduate research and development projects and otherwise connect scholarship with teaching will be looked upon favorably.

Complete applications will include a cover letter addressing interest in Lawrence in particular, a curriculum vitae, statements on teaching, research, and diversity, undergraduate and graduate transcripts, and the contact information for three references who will be asked directly by Lawrence University to provide a letter of recommendation (two of which attest specifically to teaching). The diversity statement should describe the candidate’s experience related to addressing issues of diversity, equity, inclusion, and antiracism in an academic setting and ways that they would contribute to these efforts at Lawrence. The teaching statement should address both experience and philosophy; the research statement should address accomplishments and plans for future work in the context of a liberal arts institution. Evaluation of applications will begin October 1st and continue until the position is filled. Please submit electronic copies to http://lawrence.peopleadmin.com.

We welcome applications from individuals who will help us create a more inclusive Lawrence by: (1) further diversifying the faculty; and/or (2) demonstrating experience with successful diversity-related initiatives, creative activity or research; and (3) demonstrating interest in developing inclusive pedagogy to address the needs of a diverse student body, particularly as these pedagogies relate to antiracism and decolonizing the curriculum.

Lawrence’s diverse student body comprises 1500 undergraduates from 47 states and D.C. and more than 45 countries. Recent computer science graduates are employed at Airbnb, Apple, Amazon, Facebook, Google, LinkedIn, Microsoft, Nintendo, Pixar, Epic, Smart Things, and Workday. Others have attended graduate programs at Wisconsin, Minnesota, Georgia Tech, North Carolina State, RPI, USC, RIT, and Michigan. Appleton has consistently been listed among the best places to live in the U.S., with Lawrence routinely meriting similar national distinction. Candidates are encouraged to read more about Lawrence at https://lawrence.peopleadmin.com as well as www.lawrence.edu/ and Colleges That Change Lives.
