The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Iowa State University seeks a tenured full professor and department chair for the Department of Mathematics.

Primary responsibilities of the department chair are to provide visionary leadership; to encourage excellence and innovation in teaching, research, and service; to advance the growth and professional development of students, faculty, and staff; to create a welcoming and inclusive climate; to enhance diversity, equity, and inclusion; to promote fruitful contact with all external constituents including alumni, industry and government agencies; to foster productive relationships with a variety of entities across the university community; and to facilitate faculty efforts to attract extramural grant and contract funding.

The successful applicant will also have the opportunity to maintain their own program of scholarship in a manner that is consistent with a primary administrative appointment. The successful candidate will have excellent verbal and written communication skills; strong organizational and time management skills; a commitment to diversity; and excellent interpersonal skills. The candidate will possess the supervisory and leadership skills needed to lead and advance a diverse community of accomplished teachers and scholars.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

• Ph.D. in Mathematics, or a related discipline • Must meet the university, college, and department requirements for appointment as a tenured full professor • Recognition for research and scholarship commensurate with a tenured full professor

Preferred Qualifications:

• Demonstrated record of effective leadership abilities and administrative experience in higher education • Excellent record of accomplishment within the areas of teaching, research, and service • Evidence of organizational and personnel management skills • Experience of supporting student success • Ability to develop and foster relationships with students, faculty, staff and external constituents • Evidence of fiscal and budget experience and commitment to generating external funding • Evidence of commitment to supporting the teaching and research missions of a major research university • Evidence of commitment and ability to create a climate of diversity and inclusion for students, faculty, and staff

Department/Program & College Description:

The Department of Mathematics provides a vibrant intellectual environment and includes about 35 tenure-eligible faculty, 25 teaching faculty and postdoctoral associates, and 70 graduate students. The department offers undergraduate degrees, M.S. and Ph.D. programs in Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, and a post-baccalaureate certificate program. The Department is housed in Carver Hall, whose naming in honor of George Washington Carver reflects the university’s long-standing commitment to diversity. As part of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the department is strongly committed to serving all students with which it engages and advancing the frontiers of knowledge in both pure and applied mathematics as well as in a variety of interdisciplinary research programs.
