St. John’s College, Annapolis, MD, is accepting applications for tutors, full-time, tenure track positions on the faculty.

In our four-year, integrated Program of Instruction, we study great books of the western tradition, including works in mathematics, natural science, literature, philosophy, history, politics, music, religion and theology. The organization of our classes enables us to approach the books in complementary ways: in seminars, we approach them solely through sustained, exploratory conversation; in the language, mathematics, and music tutorials, and in the laboratory, we approach them through detailed examinations of their teachings and their elements, as well as through associated practices such as experiment and choral singing. (The program includes four years of seminar, of language study, and of mathematics; three years of laboratory; and one year of music.)

On account of the breadth of the curriculum, we encourage applications from candidates in many academic disciplines, in the humanities, social sciences, arts, mathematics, and natural sciences.

Teaching members of the faculty are inquisitive and committed to learning, as are our students. There are no departments: all members of the faculty teach in all parts of the program and gradually acquire increased understanding in a variety of disciplines. As classes proceed through cooperative inquiry and conversation, where each learns from others, the faculty are a community of peers: there are no ranks, all are known as “tutors,” and compensation is calculated according to years of service.

St. John’s is an equal opportunity employer, and committed to attracting and retaining a diverse college community. The College Leadership Statement on Diversity and Inclusion (April 2022) can be found here: https://www.sjc.edu/about/leadership/board-visitors-governors/task-forces/diversity-and-inclusion.

Applications received by December 21, 2022, are guaranteed to receive full consideration for appointments beginning in fall 2022; applications will be accepted thereafter.

To apply, please submit (1) a statement that presents in some detail (a) what questions most interest you, questions that may or may not be related to your scholarly interests, (b) how your interests might intersect with the St. John’s Program, and (c) what you might contribute and what you might gain from being a tutor; (2) a brief writing that exhibits your way of being thoughtful; (3) a curriculum vitae; (4) three letters of recommendation from persons who have known you in an academic capacity; (5) transcripts of undergraduate and graduate work, and (6) an employment application with essential data (link). We prefer to receive all materials in pdf form by email at Annapolis.DeansOffice@sjc.edu.
