Position Description
In 2022, UNC Chapel Hill launched the School of Data Science and Society (SDSS), a new school devoted to data science teaching, research, scholarship, service, and creativity. The SDSS vision is to be a leader in shaping the field of data science through an interdisciplinary and rigorous grounding in theory and methods with a human centric approach to the entire data life cycle. Position Summary: This position will supervise section instructions for courses in the Master of Applied Data Science (MADS) program as well as teach multiple sections of courses when needed that align with the candidate’s educational background. In addition, this position will help with instructor hiring and development process. Another aspect of this position is to help develop new courses and electives for the MADS program as the program grows. The position reports to the Dean of the School. Responsibilities: This position will hold a supervisory role for section instructors that deliver the synchronous material for the Master of Applied Data Science (MADS) program courses, providing mentoring and guidance to them and being able to fill in when needed. This role will actively participate in the design and implementation of a scalable section instructor hiring and development process that aligns with the program’s evolution over time and contributes to engagement of section instructors. This position will teach multiple sections for the MADS program when needed and according to their academic and professional background. This role will also contribute to the development of new courses and electives for the MADS program, according to their academic and professional background. The position will participate in prioritized research activities on pedagogical techniques and technologies, data science academic trends and topics, and potential electives and concentrations for SDSS’s academic programs, and will work with SDSS’s Senior Associate Dean of Academic and Faculty Affairs to suggest improvements to SDSS’s academic programs. Educational Requirements: Candidates must hold a doctorate and have previous teaching experience at an undergraduate and/or graduate level in Data Science or a related field. Preferred Qualifications: Teaching and research experience in Data Science related courses, supervisory experience, curriculum design & pedagogical research, online-formal teaching experience. Salary and stating date: Salary will be competitive and commensurate with rank and experience. The proposed starting date is July 1, 2024.
