The WPI Department of Mathematical Sciences invites applications for the Harold J. Gay Professorship. This is a senior position (with tenure) at the level of Professor or Associate Professor, to begin in the Fall of 2023. To promote research and visibility, the H.J. Gay Professorship has a reduced teaching load and is provided funds to run the H.J. Gay Lecture Series, which aims to bring top researchers from around the world to highlight milestones and contemporary trends in different areas of mathematics and statistics.

We seek candidates whose research areas are complementary to research areas in the department, which include:
 • Algebra and Discrete Mathematics
 • Analysis
• Applied Mathematics (Fluid Dynamics, Mathematical Biology, Materials Science, Numerical Analysis, Probability and Stochastic Analysis)
• Financial Mathematics
• Statistics (Bayesian Inference, Biostatistics and Bioinformatics, Compressed Sensing, Machine Learning, Time Series)
The successful applicant will be an acknowledged international research scholar, with an exemplary track record in research, funding, and education. At WPI, we value contributions to the teaching mission of the department, which embraces project-based learning. Interest to interact and contribute to WPI’s interdisciplinary programs and initiatives, which include Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, Cybersecurity, Data Science, Neuroscience, and Quantum Information Science, is welcomed and encouraged. Candidates should have a PhD in Mathematics, Statistics, or a related field.

The department has over 40 faculty and postdocs. Our undergraduate programs in Mathematical Sciences and Actuarial Mathematics have over 200 students and our graduate programs have approximately 100 students. At the graduate level, we have several master’s programs (Applied Statistics, Applied Mathematics, and Industrial Mathematics) and we offer PhDs in Mathematical Sciences and Statistics. The department has a strong reputation for its cutting-edge interdisciplinary research and for its successful programs addressing mathematical and statistical problems in industry, with a Center for Industrial Mathematics and Statistics (CIMS).

Qualified applicants should submit (1) a curriculum vitae, (2) a teaching statement, (3) a research statement, (4) a cover letter, and (5) four letters of recommendation, at least one of which addresses teaching experience.
