The Mathematics Department in the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at the University of Houston expects to hire a Research Associate 1. The position will be for two years, with the possibility of a one year renewal. The successful applicant will conduct research in an area compatible with the research interests of the Mathematics Department. For this position we are especially interested in computational mathematics, mathematical medicine, mathematical biology or related areas. In addition the successful applicant may teach up to one course per semester.

Description:

Works under the direction of a faculty member. Provides expertise in the design, operation and analysis of experiments or research projects in areas such as chemistry, biology, psychology, sociology, mathematics, statistics, computer science, physics, optometry, all fields of engineering, etc. May prepare samples for testing. Performs advanced testing procedures and performs analyses of data. Prepares reports. Makes uses of a variety of specialized equipment typical within area of specialization. May contribute to grant proposal development. Ensures experiments or research efforts are performed according to specifications. May make recommendations to changes in procedures, processes, or experimental design. May prepare and/or edit research papers, proposals and reports.Possesses, understands, and applies a comprehensive knowledge that crosses fields of specialization. Understands and uses effective management techniques.

Duties: Designs, operates and analyzes large experiments or research projects. May serve as liaison with other areas of specialization to obtain support or technical expertise for projects. Recommends major changes in procedures or processes for research investigations. May personally conduct important and/or technically complex investigations.

Supervision: Operates with considerable latitude for un-reviewed action. Provides direction and supervision of graduate or undergraduate research assistants involved in experiments or research. The successful applicant will conduct research in an area compatible with the research interests of the Mathematics Department. For this position we are especially interested in a candidate that has a strong track record in one or more of the following areas:- Variational problems, particularly, 3D shape optimization/matching/tracking or diffeomorphic image registration; non-linear control of shape deformations- PDE-constrained optimization and optimal control, particularly, fitting of complex, 3D models to (medical) imaging data- Computational inverse problems, particularly, Bayesian inversion and uncertainty quantification- Large-scale data analytics based on machine learning or related areas. The planned application domain is the analysis of sequences of 3D biomedical images. Having a strong background in parallel scientific computing, high-performance computing and experience in C/C++ programming is a plus.
